As common as it is to go on vacation during the summer season, there are some of us that see summer fly by before we can even look at destination getaways. Michiganders know that summer seems to end as soon as it begins, so, as the end of summer closes in, why not take the opportunity to squeeze the last bit of warm sunshine and vacation time out of the season?
If you’re looking for a quick getaway for a couple of days, Michigan is home to several great destinations. So, grab your favorite people, load up the car and head out to a last minute summer getaway in Michigan.
Located near Lake Michigan, the Silver Lake Sand Dunes Area is a great destination for land and sea-dwellers. Here, you can explore more than 2,000 acres of sand dunes, then rent a canoe and head out to Lake Michigan, all before ending the day on the beach of Silver Lake. There are also places to go shopping for souvenirs and restaurants to stay fueled for your next adventure. Turnip Rock is a Michigan- favorite kayaking spot. You’ll have to head up to the tip of “The Thumb” at Port Austin, where you will set off on a 7-mile kayak trip to Turnip Rock, catching beautiful views of Lake Huron along the way. Turnip Rock is known as a natural wonder in Michigan, as it has taken the shape of an inverted pyramid, with its widest point at the top. Explore Metro Detroit in a vehicle built for discovery. The northernmost spot on this list, Charlevoix sits on the fresh water of Lake Michigan where you can enjoy boat rides, kayaking, and the relaxing state of watching the sun set on the water. Rent a charter boat and go fishing, go for a swim in the lake or take in a concert from the Charlevoix summer concert series “Live on the Lake.” With such beauty and activity, it’s no wonder American author Ernest Hemingway spent his summers here. Located on St. Clair River, Marine City is one of a few towns that share a border on the river with Canada to the east. In addition to spending time on the river, you can take in a live theatre performance at one of two theatres, go shopping at the waterfront shopping district, enjoy a riverfront concert, visit a museum and more. Plus, visiting Marine City is like two trips in one. With your passport in hand, visiting Sombra, Ontario, Canada is a quick ferry trip away. Like Silver Lake and Charlevoix, Ludington is located on Lake Michigan, but instead of sand dunes, you can enjoy one of several beaches, go fishing on Lake Michigan or inland, visit Ludington State Park, take the car ferry to Wisconsin and more. In addition to camping, boating, fishing and swimming, Ludington State Park has eight marked trails for hiking that give you a glimpse of nature’s beauty. The 410-foot S.S. Badger Carferry, which runs from May until October, carries 620 passengers and 180 vehicles and includes two restaurants to dine in, places to shop and more. Where will you spend the end of summer? With so many beautiful, relaxing places in Michigan, it’s hard to pick just one!
