The Thanksgiving weekend can be hectic; between preparing the dinner, to coordinating family schedules, and everything in between, it can be challenging to remember to have some fun over the holiday. Luckily for you, there are many communities in Metro Detroit that have great family events taking place. So whether you need to entertain family from out of town or you are just looking for something to do over the long weekend, here are five fun events taking place.

Detroit Institute of Awesome: Thanksgiving Break at the DIA

The Detroit Institute of Arts is always a great place to take the family, especially this weekend when they are hosting their Detroit Institute of Awesome on Friday, November 23. The event will include a gallery adventure in the Dutch galleries on the third floor and more family fun in the Prentis Court. It is free with general admission, which is, of course, free for residents of Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb.

The Big Bright Light Show

From farm work to heavy lifting, the Chevy Silverado is built to tackle the toughest tasks with ease.

Get ready to light up your holiday spirit with this year’s Big Bright Light Show in downtown Rochester. Over one million points of glimmering lights will light up the streets creating the perfect holiday atmosphere. The daily spectacle will begin every night at 5 p.m. until midnight through January 6.

Fantasy of Lights Parade

While many local parades take place during the day on Thanksgiving, Howell decides to have its Big Bright Light Show on the Friday after Thanksgiving starting at 7 p.m. The illuminating nighttime parade includes dozens of bright and unique floats, marching bands, and of course, an appearance from Santa Claus. It is an exciting way to kick off the start of the holiday season and fun night for all families.

Birmingham Carriage Rides

Get the whole family in the holiday spirit with carriage rides through downtown Birmingham starting this weekend. The free carriage rides are first-come, first-served and start at Shain Park. Rides begin on Saturday, November 24 and will take place every weekend leading up to Christmas.
