While there is nothing wrong with big budgeted, superhero extravaganzas, sometimes you might want to watch something a little more understated. Maybe you’re in the mood for a fun cult classic, an engaging documentary, or an acclaimed live production. Whatever you’re in the mood for, Metro Detroit knows its audience and has created local screenings for every film buff. Here are a few screenings you shouldn’t miss.
“Mandy” at the Main Art Theatre (1/25 & 1/26)
Although this Nicolas Cage thriller came out last year, it immediately seemed destined to be a midnight movie favorite for years to come. The Landmark Main Art Theatre in Royal Oak specializes in showing movies like that, and you’re not going to want to miss this one playing at midnight this upcoming Friday and Saturday. Other midnight screenings they have scheduled include “Good Burger,” “Serenity,” and “The Craft.”
“Scott Pilgrim vs. The World” at The State Theater (1/26)
Another cult classic film destined to play at midnight screenings is Edgar Wright’s “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.” The Michael Cera starrer has plenty of video game and comic book references along with quick-paced humor and countless quotable lines. The film is part of The State Theatre’s “Late-Nights at the State” series, which also includes 2017’s “Baby Driver” on Friday, January 25.
“National Theatre Live: Hamlet” at The Michigan Theatre (1/27)
There’s nothing more dramatic than live theater, and The Michigan Theater showcases that with their National Theatre Live series. Their next installment is an encore presentation of 2015’s “Hamlet” production starring Academy Award nominee Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role. “Do the Right Thing” at the Redford Theater (2/1)
Responsible for making Spike Lee one of the most influential directors of the last few decades, “Do the Right Thing” has undoubtedly stood the test of time since its debut in 1989. The Redford Theater shows plenty of classic movies each month, with “The Philadelphia Story” and “Gone with the Wind” showing over the next month. The theater will also be hosting a Detroit Blues Celebration on Saturday, February 23.
“The Gospel According to Andre” at the Detroit Film Theatre (2/2)
The Detroit Institute of Arts showcases the finest art from around the world, including films at their Detroit Film Theatre. They showcase plenty of little-seen films, and one of those include “The Gospel According to Andre.” The documentary shows the emotional journey of one of the biggest fashion icons of the 20th century.
