This time of year, love is in the air, as they say. Aside from the loving people in my life, there are a couple of things I love, too. I love comic books. I love movies. And, I love chocolate. If you’re trying to make your way into my heart, chocolate isn’t a bad way to go. Just looking at all of these great, local chocolatiers has my heart aflutter…or is that my sweet tooth?
After being recognized by Eater as one of America’s best chocolate shops in the country last October, it’s hard to not mention Bon Bon Bon in a list of great, local chocolatiers. The Detroit/Hamtramck chocolate shop was founded by Alexandra Clark who wanted to upend conventional ideas about confectionery treats. She and her team create some of the most eye-pleasing bonbons I have ever seen and they’re as delicious as they look. Check out their premade assorted boxes or build a box of your own for that special someone this Valentine’s Day.

Named after a town in Ecuador, Mindo Chocolate in Dexter is owned by Jose Meza and Barbara Wilson. Meza is a native of Ecuador and after he and Wilson retired from their auto repair shop, they made a trip to his home country and bought some land in Mindo. Today, the couple produces their own chocolate at facilities they built in Mindo and Dexter and sells it internationally. Browse their website and you’ll find high-quality items from the cocoa beans themselves to finished, signature chocolate bars, like a 77% Michigan cherry bar and a 67% Michigan blueberry dark chocolate bar.

Receiving its namesake from founder Pete Steffy, a Detroit native, Pete’s Chocolate Co. was started as Steffy’s passion project in 2009. Today, Pete’s small-batch chocolates can be found at retailers across Metro Detroit and local farmers markets. Pete specializes in truffle chocolates, hot chocolate mixes and treats for special events, such as weddings and corporate events.
This small-batch chocolate shop in Ann Arbor sources all of its ingredients from high-quality chocolate manufacturers around the world and infuses the chocolate with “the four seasons of Michigan.” Some of their truffle flavors include “Port in a Storm” (made in partnership with Sandhill Crane Vineyards in Jackson) and seasonal “Pates de Fruits” (made with Michigan fruit, like blackberry, strawberry, red raspberry and more). These chocolates are a taste of Michigan in chocolate form — what more could you want?
