One Pair of Shoes Can Change a Kid’s Whole School Year.

More than four out of five students in Detroit Public Schools come from economically disadvantaged homes. About 4,000 are experiencing homelessness right now. Kids who do not have shoes that fit miss more school, sit out from gym class, and get picked on for something that is not their fault. Some kids have never even owned a new pair of shoes.
Michigan schools have a Count Day every fall. Whoever is in that seat on that one Wednesday determines 90% of the state funding their school gets for the entire year. One empty desk costs a district roughly $10,000.
October 7 is Count Day. It is also the day every pair of shoes you donate gets handed to an impoverished child in Metro Detroit.
In 2015, five women turned their love of shoes into something bigger. Since then, Lace Up Detroit has put more than 18,000 pairs of shoes and boots and 7,000 pairs of socks on the feet of kids and women across Southeast Michigan.
It is run entirely by volunteers, and every donation goes straight to shoes.
From Sept 1-30, bring a new pair of shoes, boots, or socks to any of the 38 participating Chevy Detroit Dealers.
Most needed sizes: Youth 2 to 6 | Women’s 7 to 12 | Men’s 7 to 14
Preferred brands: Nike, Adidas, New Balance, Under Armour, Puma, Vans
Socks are always needed too, and they are the one thing almost nobody thinks to give.
Cannot get to a store? Lace Up Detroit buys at wholesale, so a $25 donation puts a brand new pair of shoes on a child in need. They are an all-volunteer 501(c)(3), which means your money buys shoes and nothing else.
