Let’s be honest, comic books and stores can sometimes have a “socially awkward” stigma attached to them, but have you ever actually been inside a comic book store? Definitely not the case. You’d actually probably be surprised at the number of comic book stores we have here in Metro Detroit. There seems to be one on every corner, and I’ve never really noticed until recently.
Detroit Comics, located at 23333 Woodward in Ferndale, is apparently a hop, skip and jump away from my office, so this may be the first one I would venture to. Actually, that “socially awkward stigma” I mentioned above is exactly what this place avoids. This store strives to make the comic-buying experience fun for both comic novices (like myself) and life-long readers. Detroit Comics receives a plethora of new comics into the store each week, so that special issue you were looking for may just come in. Did I mention Free Comic Book Day? On Saturday, May 3 Detroit Comics will give away free comics, as well as bring in artists and guests. Stay tuned for the announcement of who will be attending.
Time Travelers, 3277 12 Mile Rd., in Berkley is your one-stop shop for comics, cards and collectibles for all comic book enthusiasts. It is one of Michigan’s biggest comic book stores and also offers video games and DVDs. If you want to find anything comics related, this is the place to go. Time Travelers is also always looking to buy, so if you have old comics, coins, collectibles, etc., this store will pay top-dollar for your items. If you find yourself in the Berkley area and have an itching for comic books, this is a good place to go.
Warp 9 Comics and Collectibles located at 21 W. 14 Mile Rd., in Clawson “is the haven for all comic books and toy collectors.” A full collection of Marvel, DC, Dark Horse and Image comics are offered here. Much like the other stores mentioned, Warp 9 constantly re-stocks the shelves with new comics each week. It is also open seven days a week for your comic book viewing pleasure. It is a Digital partner with DC Comics, you can check out “Digital First Series” and other new comics and shorts. This comic book shop seems like the place to be for comic connoisseurs everywhere.

Green Brain Comics resides at 13210 Michigan Ave. in Dearborn. It is a family-owned comic book store that has been awarded Metro Times’ “Best Comic Store” among other awards. Green Brain often brings in local cartoonists and comic creators for signings and meet and greets. Green Brain has been featured on many news segments and often makes the list of best comic book stores to visit in Metro Detroit. They will have The Green Brain Comic Jam on Wednesday, February 12. Couple that with all the classic and new comics it has and I would definitely recommend stopping in for a visit.
Back to the Past Collectibles located at 12670 Inkster Rd., in Redford is not only one of the biggest collectibles and comic book shops in Michigan, it is also one of the biggest in the Midwest with a 4,000 square foot showroom. It isn’t just a comic book store, it’s a warehouse full of pop culture and iconic collectibles that will take you back in time. It has been voted the number one comic store in Detroit for five years running by the Detroit Cityvoter competition. Back to the Past has been around since 1990 so it is literally as old as I am—needless to say it has this comic book stuff down. It is also always looking to buy your items, so if you have some old comics or collectibles just gathering dust, consider selling them here.
There you have it. These are some of the best places to check out the latest and greatest versions of your favorite comics in Metro Detroit. Keep in mind, there are plenty of other great stores in the area!
