When it’s cold out and you’re not quite sure what to do in the D, just remember: there’s plenty to do in southeast Michigan during the winter months! One such fun-filled winter-friendly activity is going to the theater! And I don’t mean the movie theater (just this once).
Whether you like musicals, opera, comedy or all of the above, there is an upcoming theater event for you. Going to the theater provides a fun, sophisticated night out on the town, so get ready to add one (or more) of the following events to your social calendar:
The Fox Theatre, 2211 Woodward Ave., Detroit, is a gorgeous venue with plenty of upcoming shows for families, friends and dates. Take your little ones to see “Sesame Street Live” now through Monday, Feb. 16 for a perfect family outing.
If you’re a huge music buff, you might appreciate “Elvis Lives,” the ultimate Elvis tribute show, on Friday, Feb. 20. Tickets range between $29.50 and $55. Gabriel Iglesias brings his comedic chops to the stage on Saturday, March 7, which might not be your first association with “theater,” but he sure is funny.
The City Theatre, 2301 Woodward Ave., Detroit, is located inside Hockeytown Café, and the cast put on a thoroughly entertaining performance of “Evil Dead: The Musical” this past October. I’m sure that “Spank! The Fifty Shades Parody,” which runs from Wednesday, Feb. 4 through Sunday, Feb. 8, will be equally amusing.
Perhaps that’s not exactly up your alley, but surely “ROBOCOP! The Musical” is. It makes its run Thursday, Feb. 19 through Sunday, March 1. All tickets cost $29.50.
The Fisher Theatre, 3011 W. Grand Blvd., Detroit, has been around for over 85 years, and this year’s Broadway schedule begins with “Once” from Tuesday, Feb. 3 through Sunday, Feb. 15. The show is an eight time Tony Award® winner! You can purchase tickets online here.
Additional shows at the Fisher Theatre throughout the season include “Million Dollar Quartet,” which runs Friday, March 6 through Sunday March 8, and “Flashdance the Musical” in mid-March.
The Detroit Opera House, 1526 Broadway St., Detroit, is the state’s premiere opera company, and there’s plenty going on right now. Be sure to catch “Shen Yun” from Thursday, Feb. 5 through Sunday, Feb. 8. The show is full of traditional Chinese dance and music, and tickets can be purchased online.
The Baldwin Theatre, 415 S. Lafayette Ave., Royal Oak, is home to the Stagecrafters, and this season includes main stage and second stage shows. See “Jekyll & Hyde the Musical” this Friday, Jan. 30 through Sunday, Feb. 1. The show is based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s story, and tickets cost $20 to $22.
Next month, see “Spring Awakening” from Friday, Feb. 13 through Sunday, March 1. Tickets to the rock musical cost just $18 and half-price student night is on Thursday, Feb. 19 with a valid student ID.
The Hilberry Theatre, 4743 Cass Ave., Detroit, of Wayne State University is putting on several shows throughout the 2014 to 2015 season, including “The Way of the World,” which is playing now through Saturday, March 7. Graduate students at Wayne State pursuing degrees in acting, directing or design put on each show at the Hilberry Theatre.
Coming soon is “An Enemy of the People,” which begins on Friday, Feb. 20 and runs through the end of March. Tickets for both shows can be purchased online.
There you have it, Metro Detroiters. Going to a theater show might not be in your normal wheelhouse, but make 2015 a year of new experiences! It’s time to get some culture.
