Filmed in the D: Upcoming Movies You Won’t Want to Miss

If you’re anything like me, you love a good movie. If you’re anything like me you also have a huge sense of pride in where you are from (even if I sometimes request to be somewhere warm). What do you get when you put those two things together? A list of movies that have already been filmed, are currently filming or are set to film in the Motor City and its Metropolitan area. Some of the films are highly anticipated and some aren’t as well-known, but regardless Michigan has a long history of movies being made here. Let’s see what is on tap for the future.

Untitled Superman/Batman – Before you guys go yelling at me, it has not officially been named “Batman vs. Superman.” It is probably the most anticipated movie on this list and filming begins in the Detroit area sometime in February.

I don’t know if you’ve seen Man of Steel, but it was awesome in my opinion! Henry Cavill will once again play Superman in this sequel. Many people have a problem with veteran actor Ben Affleck playing the role of Batman, and I admit I’m skeptical too, but I have to let myself believe that the producers and director, Zack Snyder know what they’re doing.

This movie will bring more than 400 jobs to Michigan workers and estimates using approximately 500 Michigan vendors during production.  Unfortunately we’ll have to wait a little while, as its release isn’t until summer 2015.

Whether you're going out on a fishing trip, discovering new hiking spots, or heading out for a weekend of camping, the Trailblazer is an ideal companion for your active lifestyle.

Transformers: Age of Extinction – Often times while in Detroit this past summer, I found myself walking by the Paramount Pictures set. The latest Transformers film turned Detroit into Hong Kong…and then destroyed it. It wrapped it’s Detroit shooting in about two weeks time.

Transformers: Age of Extinction is another highly anticipated film, starring Mark Wahlberg. According to the International Movie Database (IMDb) the movie is in post-production.  It comes out this summer with a release date listed as June 27, 2014. I can’t wait!

How to Catch a Monster – Every girl’s (from what I hear) dream guy, Ryan Gosling makes his directorial debut with this fantasy thriller. This film spent a lot of time in the D, and filmed at several locations. Detroit’s Masonic Temple, Cass Corridor and Jefferson Avenue are a few local spots you may recognize.

How to Catch a Monster is about a mother of two who is swept into the “underworld” and her son who must go on an adventure to save her. The film stars Matt Smith (famous for his role in Dr. Who), Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks and Gosling’s real life girlfriend Eva Mendes. The film is targeting a summer 2014 release date.

Need for Speed: You have played the best-selling video game, now it is time to see how it translates into a featured-film. Race Car Replicas of Clinton Township and Technosports, Inc., of Livonia built cars for the movie.

I played the video game, so I am excited to see the film. The project also hired 100 Michigan workers and filmed right in downtown.

Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) will play the lead as character “Tobey Marshall.” Other actors include Michael Keaton, Dakota Johnson, Dominic Cooper and rapper Scott Mescudi (better known as Kid Cudi). Need for Speed races into theaters on March 14, 2014.

I think I want to see all of these movies, but above all else it really makes me smile to hear that the directors and producers of these big-budget films choose to shoot in our city.
