Spending an arm and a leg to get fit at the gym this winter doesn’t exactly sound like a good time to me. Why not get toned and beat seasonal depression without shelling out your life savings?

It may seem like the gym is your only option, but nothing could be further from the truth. There are several studios (and even an indoor skate park) in Metro Detroit that offer fitness options at prices that appeal to those of us on a budget.

Skateland West, 37550 Cherry Hill Rd., Westland, offers Zumba classes and other drop-in fitness events for $5 a session (unless otherwise noted). Upcoming events include a Family Zumba Party, Date Night Yoga and a Turbo Kick class. All of which are a great way to get fit with the fam—all classes are open to children ages 12 and up.

Canton’s Summit on the Park, 46000 Summit Parkway, features a fitness center with some surprisingly affordable options. Month-long classes including Beginner Yoga, Cardio Cycle and Kettlebells meet once a week. While the enrollment fee is $35-$50, that means you’re only spending $7-$10 a session.

From backyard projects to weekend getaways, the Chevy Blazer offers unmatched cargo space and convenience for all your adventures.

Awaken Studio, 227 Iron St., Detroit, is offering donation-based yoga, Pilates and Zumba classes throughout January and February. You can’t beat that! It’s a great option for those of you looking to get lean without paying a pretty penny.

If you want to dance yourself fit, Zumba Fitness with Chandra Floyd is the answer. Floyd, a licensed instructor, teaches drop-in Zumba classes at GIVE Fitness, 200 Mt. Elliott, Detroit, on Mondays and Thursdays at 5:45 p.m. Each class is only $8, or you can sign up for 4 classes for $25.

Another way to get your groove on is with Kristi Faulkner Dance, a Detroit dance company that provides lessons at Affirmations, 290 W. 9 Mile, Ferndale. Classes are held every Monday at 7 p.m. and for a $5 suggested donation, participants will learn a different genre of dance each week. The classes are designed for beginners, so no worries if you’re not “Dancing with the Stars” worthy yet.

If you happen to be out on the town on Wednesday night, head to The Sky Club above Sangria, 401 S. Lafayette, Royal Oak, where the Troy Dance Studio gives free salsa dance lessons every Wednesday at 9 p.m. It’s a great way to exercise and socialize at the same time!

You no longer have an excuse to spend the rest of winter lounging on the couch (or stuck inside a gym), so grab a friend and go!
