From backyard projects to weekend getaways, the Chevy Blazer offers unmatched cargo space and convenience for all your adventures.
Planes, trains and cars, oh my! Yes, I am talking about in the model form here. You can find these items and so much more at a local hobby shop.
I’ve never been much of a hobby shop-enthusiast, mainly because I don’t have the patience to put anything together, but the things you can find in these stores are quite mind-blowing! Arts and crafts, coins, model kits, books and games are just a few of the items you might stumble upon. There truly is something for everybody.
Metro Detroit has quite a few hobby shops and gaming stores sprinkled around. Let’s highlight a few!
Whistle Stop Hobby & Toy, 21714 Harper Ave., in St. Clair Shores seriously has it all! From model kits to science kits, this store has your hobby of choice covered. In addition to all of the hobby supplies, Whistle Stop has a great selection of toys. Whether it is action toys, dolls or anything in between you need, this place has your back. The current building is 5,000-square feet and opened in 1984, but Whistle Stop has been in business in the Detroit area since 1969!
From backyard projects to weekend getaways, the Chevy Blazer offers unmatched cargo space and convenience for all your adventures.
Rainy Day Hobbies is located at 22939 Woodward Ave., in Ferndale (aka right across the street from my office). The store offers a plethora of unique items, but it is definitely the right place for those who enjoy various types of model trains. You could find R/C cars, boats, planes, rockets, games and even telescopes here, to name a few things. The shop’s name is quite “punny” as it is both playing on things to do on rainy days and named after its owner, Rainy Hamilton Jr.
Prop Shop Hobbies resides at 23326 Van Dyke Ave., in Warren and has been a go-to model shop for Metro Detroit residents since 1975. Models are plentiful in this shop, including both plastic aircrafts and land vehicles, or wood aircrafts and ships. Factor in the slot cars, kites and everything else Prop Shop has to offer and you’ll realize why you need to pay this shop a visit. Plus, Prop Shop Hobbies is a family-owned and operated business!
Guild of Blades, located at 775 E. 14 Mile, in Clawson is the black sheep of this group. By that I mean GOB is a more tailored store. If gaming is your hobby then this is one place you’ll need to check out! Video games, board games, cards, role-playing games and much more are all sold here. Oh, and don’t forget about accessories for said things. GOB just moved to the Clawson location and now boasts a 7,900-square foot facility!
Like I mentioned earlier, if you go into one of these shops then chances are high that you will find something that catches your eye. That is no secret, but the variety of items these shops offer is the most enticing thing! Stop in for a visit. I think I will as well.
