The Magic Bag in Ferndale has known many faces throughout the decades. It has carried the identity of an art house in the 60’s, an adult-only theatre in the 70’s and an adult entertainment club in the 80’s. Through the years it has transformed itself many times. However, it was not until 1996 when Jeremy Haberman purchased it, that the Magic Bag became what it is today; A quaint, eclectic club that is one of the best places around to see a movie or catch a concert.

When Haberman bought the Magic Bag, he set about making some changes that truly enhanced the atmosphere of the venue greatly improving the concert going experience. And concerts are one of the things that the Magic Bag knows well! The first artist to play there was Junior Wells in April of 1996. Since then, the Magic Bag has seen everyone from local Detroit talent up to some very big, national tours. The Magic Bag hosts just about every genre of music, so there is something there for everyone. Rock, metal, soul, jazz, blues and reggae… they all can be found on the stage of the Magic Bag!

You can catch concerts at the Magic Bag about 5 nights a week. Thursday-Saturday there is almost always someone playing and sometimes on a Tuesday or Sunday there will be a show as well. Tickets prices vary according to who is playing, but usually range from $8 for a local act up to $15-$20 for a nationally touring one.

In addition to great music, the Magic Bag also hosts the weekly Brew & View. This happens every Wednesday and sometimes on Thursdays if there is no concert scheduled. The Brew & View is versatile and a good time for just about any occasion. Whether you are flying solo, on a date night or hanging with a group, the Brew & View is a great place to catch a flick. Plus, you get to drink! What better way to watch a movie then with a cold beverage in hand.

The movies showing are usually second run or cult classics. Though there will occasionally be a horror show or thriller, they like to keep it light and fun. As an additional bonus, part of the draw of seeing a film at the Magic Bag are the classic movie trailers that run prior to each show. Tickets are only $2 and the drinks are priced very reasonably. With ample parking behind the venue, it is a great place to come and be part of the electric atmosphere of Ferndale.

Haberman loves the Ferndale scene and credits the location of the Magic Bag as part of its success. It is a symbiotic relationship of sorts. The Magic Bag flourished due to its close proximity to Woodward, I-75 and 696 and in turn, it was the “tipping point” for the revitalization of Ferndale. Haberman loves the community and the wide array of nightlife that it boasts. The Magic Bag fits in perfectly with this casual and fun atmosphere.

The Magic Bag offers a full service bar for both concerts and movies. There is also fresh popcorn available to munch on. During both concerts and movies, there is waitress service available, so you don’t need to interrupt your night with a trip to the bar… unless you feel the need to stretch your legs and mingle a bit!
