The DIY Street Fair will be returning for its 10th year this weekend showcasing the community’s best local artists from many spectrums. The popular street fair celebrates those with the ‘Do-It-Yourself’ attitude and showcases a wide range of art including paintings, photography, glasswork, jewelry, and so much more.

Krista Johnston, co-owner of Woodward Avenue Brewers in downtown Ferndale, remembers when the fair was a neighborhood event. Many people were getting let go from their jobs and in order to keep paying the bills, they sold their works of art. So, the community decided to come together in order for them to have a place to sell their work.

Flash forward ten years and the unique street fair is still taking over 9 Mile and Woodward for a weekend of celebration. This year is bigger than ever, featuring over 150 artists, 50 craft beers, a wine garden and the free ferris wheel, which is making its return.

“The first DIY Street Fair was a small backyard party compared to what it is today. The DIY Street Fair of today still has the same genuine quality and community-oriented feel, but now everyone invites their friends,” said Johnston. “It’s that same backyard party–just with a larger yard.”

As we highlighted last week, The band lineup has never been more impressive. All the concert goodness will be taking place on the Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers stage and at the Loving Touch. Both are located next to WAB on Woodward and will feature performances from the likes of Joe Hertler & The Rainbow Seekers, Reverend Peyton, Mustard Plug, and Gold Crayon across the two stages.

There’s so much to do at this year’s street fair, and those looking for a little competitive fun can participate in the free cornhole tournament sponsored by Michigan Cornhole and your Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers.

The two double elimination tournaments will take place on Saturday with check in for the first tournament at 11:30 a.m. and the second tournament at 4 p.m. So grab a buddy and compete for some awesome prizes.

You can bring the whole family too as there will be plenty of activities for them to enjoy. The free Kids Zone is bigger and better than ever this year with the ferris wheel and the opportunity for kids to create their own art.

The free Kids Zone offers up all sorts of different avenues for kids (of all ages) to be creative and experience the DIY spirit along with respected and inspiring organizations such as the Detroit Institute of Art, Michigan Science Center, Detroit Imagination Works, Arts & Scraps and more,” said Mike Pierce, producer of the DIY Street Fair.

The DIY Street Fair is fun for all ages and is one of Ferndale’s most unique events. It’s a fun event for the whole family, but it is also a great event to showcase incredibly talented local artists.

“DIY Street Fair is about inspiration,” said Johnston. “It’s in every artist booth, in every craft beer that’s poured and in every note played on our stage. We’re so proud to give these dynamic and creative people a setting to share their passion and to shine!”
