Everyone loves a good movie, and there’s no better place to catch a uniquely good movie than at a film festival. Lucky for metro Detroit film buffs, The Ann Arbor Film Festival and Freep Film Festival are both taking place in the next couple of weeks and are guaranteed to showcase some special films.
Ann Arbor Film Festival, March 21-26
With more than 180 films from 20 countries, the 55th Ann Arbor Film Festival has something for everyone when it takes over the Michigan Theater and Lorch Hall next week. The festival, which is North America’s longest running independent and experimental film festival, will feature 40 different film programs. The programs range from short films, to feature films in competition, to a selection of special programs.
The festival rewards $20,000 to over 20 filmmakers, and the festival’s history of famous artists is a rich one. Past artists the festival has recognized include Yoko Ono, George Lucas, Gus Van Sant, Devo, and many more.
There’s more than movies to enjoy at the festival with special “Off The Screen!” events happening throughout the week. These events include expanded cinema performances, educational salons, and installations.

Freep Film Festival, March 30-April 2
If you are looking for a little Detroit flavor, the 4th Annual Freep Film Festival is right up your alley. The four-day festival is documentary-focused with special attention paid to films with connection to the Detroit area and the state of Michigan.
The festival gets started with a special performance from Jay and Silent Bob at the Fillmore on March 29. Film icons Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes will bring their famous characters to the stage for their comedy special titled “Jay & Silent Bob Get Old.”
The film portion of the festival begins the next day with “12th and Clairmount” at the Fillmore. The festival will feature 29 film programs with nearly 20 of them making their world or regional premiere. Screenings will take place at the DIA, Emagine Royal Oak, Emagine Novi, Third Man Records, Detroit Historical Museum, and the Cinema Detroit Theater.
