With the temperatures beginning to warm up, the sun shining longer and the birds chirping, spring is right around the corner. Another way to be assured that spring is on its way, are two local staples: the Ann Arbor Film Festival and the Freep Film Festival.
The Ann Arbor Film Festival kicks off its 54th edition beginning March 15, running through March 20. It is the longest-running independent film festival in North America! The Freep Film Festival, on the other hand, begins March 31 and goes until April 3. This year will be the festival’s third installment.
The AA festival features more than 200 films, videos and live performances. In addition, the festival will premiere more than 30 films. Feature films, historic/retrospective films, shorts and more will be shown.
Plenty of successful filmmakers and artists from all over the globe will showcase their work at the Ann Arbor event, several of whom will be in attendance as well.
While the Ann Arbor festival has an international feel, the Freep Film Festival focuses more on the city of Detroit and the state of Michigan. Several of the event’s documentaries take place in the Mitten State or follow a resident.
The Freep Film Festival begins with two events. Actor/filmmaker Kevin Smith brings his popular “Fatman on Batman” podcast to the Fillmore Detroit and the premiere of “T-Rex,” which follows the journey of female boxer Claressa Shields of Flint as she chases a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics.
The Freep Festival, presented by the Detroit Free Press and Michigan.com, hopes to foster engagement and inspire discussions about our area’s issues and triumphs. The festival’s full schedule is available online.
