For kids, summer is probably their favorite time of the year. Three months without school? Who can say no to that? For parents, on the other hand, having the kids home for three months can get difficult when you’re constantly trying to find new things for them to do. Luckily, metro Detroit has no shortage of fun activities for kids to enjoy. To kick off summer vacation, here are four kid-friendly festivals and fairs to attend this June in metro Detroit.
Ann Arbor Summer Festival (6/9-7/2)

The Ann Arbor Summer Festival has been around for 34 years, celebrating performing arts and outdoor entertainment. When it comes to fun for the kids, the KidZone at A2SF is the place to be. The KidZone Tent will have new, fun activities for kids to do all throughout the month-long festival from trying instruments with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra to a bug costume party with the UM Museum of Natural History and so much more!
Art Fish Fun Festival (6/10)
This one day festival in Pontiac will enter its fourth year on Saturday, June 10. The Festival places its focus on environment education and fishing by holding a park clean-up event, art activities and games, and yes, actual fishing. Oakland County Water Resource Commissioner Jim Nash will be on hand for a BBQ lunch, followed by fishing lessons for first-timers. The best part is that it’s open to everyone and free!
Arts & Acts 2017 (6/16-6/18)

The Arts & Acts Festival in downtown Northville is an annual festival that is put on by the Northville Art House and celebrates local artists of all ages. What’s great for young artists in the area is the Young Artist Juried Art Fair. More than 25 young artists will be presenting their work. Prior to the event, these artists will have met one-on-one with a mentor from the Northville Art House, whom will have provided a critique of their work and advice on selling and displaying artwork. It’s a fantastic opportunity for young artists to learn from their artistic elders.
GM River Days (6/23-6/25)
A staple of summertime in Detroit — the GM River Days — will return June 23-25. For the kids, you’ll want to head to the Flagstar Bank Kids Zone. This year, the Kids Zone will have carnival games and buskers. Get your face painted with a cool design. Make something unique at the arts & crafts station. Learn something from the Michigan Science Center. But, before you leave, remember to leave your mark on the Monster Mural, a life-size coloring book page to anyone can add their creativity to.
