With so many events clogging up your calendar and Facebook feed, it’s tough to notice when something a little different is happening in metro Detroit. If you’ve been wanting to expand your horizons, as they say, these four events might be just the thing. From marathons & marshmallow drops to DJ-spinning brunches & community storytelling, here are four events you probably haven’t heard of (but probably should).

Marshmallow Drop

Most Easter egg hunts take place during the day, but not this one. In fact, before even getting to the Easter eggs, how about having a bunch of multi-colored marshmallows dropped from a helicopter for kids to collect? That’s what the Howell Marshmallow Drop is all about!

Starting at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 13 with a flyover from a helicopter dropping marshmallows, the Marshmallow Drop is an event for children ages 0-8. Find a “special” marshmallow and get a prize!

Afterwards, kids will run around with flashlights looking for Easter eggs. A free photo-op with the Easter Bunny will also be available in addition to a nature tour from the Howell Nature Center. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, enjoy something from on-site food trucks. Registration for this event is open to the first 1,000 people. To register, click here.

Morning After Brunch

We’ve all had brunch, but how about brunch with a live DJ spinning great music? Add to that a featured chef, cooking up their take on brunch favorites like made-to-order omelettes and chicken & waffles and you’ve got the Morning After Brunch, a monthly event created to shine a light on a local chef and DJ. Chef Kiluanji of Sur La Table and Silver Rain will be the featured chef on April 9, while DJ Ray of #IHeartMafia spins his favorite tracks.

Martian: Invasion of the Races

Looking to run a marathon, half-marathon, 5K or 10K? Check out the Martian: Invasion of the Races on Saturday, April 22. This martian-themed day of running kicks off with the aforementioned four races plus a kids’ marathon in the afternoon. Children who are racing will be split into five groups with staggered starting times (every 20 minutes), starting at 11:40 a.m. So, put on your best martian garb and head out to Dearborn April 22.

Detroit Stories

For this monthly event, Detroiters are invited to share a story with an audience in order to highlight the diversity that exists within the city. Each month will have a different theme with April’s theme being ‘redemption.’ A total of five storytellers will share their story of redemption on April 14 at The Studio Detroit. Stick around after the stories for coffee and conversation.
