Sangria: the sweet, delicious wine-based drink has a long history that can be dated as far back as ancient Rome, though, their idea of what we now call sangria was mixing wine with water in order to purify the drinking water as their empire expanded. It wasn’t until 1951 that sangria was introduced to New York City by Lorenzo Granados at his Greenwich Village restaurant. Today, sangria is more closely associated with Spain and Portugal as a wine-based drink that is usually mixed with brandy, a sweetener of some kind, like orange juice or honey, and fruit.

It also is home to a delicious white wine sangria that is made with whatever fruits are currently in-season. What’s better is that during happy hour (Monday-Friday, 4:30-6:30 p.m.) you can enjoy this year-round delight for just $5 a glass or $23 for a carafe.

With a 40-year history to draw on, Filippa’s Wine Barrel in Shelby Township tells a colorful history of always providing the perfect wine to match your meal. In fact, Filippa’s works on a rotating list of wines available to patrons that is constantly changing, but the helpful staff is there to assist you in making the right choice. Among the red wines, you can count on a classic Spanish sangria that is served over ice in a chilled glass with fruit.

Located in downtown Northville, Lucy and the Wolf falls in line with your more upscale American eateries, offering “Aged Cocktails” (classic cocktails aged in oak barrels for a minimum of two months), plenty of salads, tacos, biscuits & honey and so much more. The sangria, however, is what we’re here to recommend to you today. Made with a touch of brandy for extra flavor, the sangria here finds itself in good company thanks to the selection of other wines.
