In a list of the most agreeable foods in the world, pizza has to stand pretty high on that list. But, pizzas aren’t a one-size-fits-all affair. Different styles, toppings, sauces, cheeses, bread and cooking methods provide for a near-limitless amount of options when it comes to pizza. While you might be content with your cheese & pepperoni or ham & pineapple pizza, there’s a whole world of artisanal pizzas out there waiting for you to chow down.

Motor City Brewing Works

Given its name, Motor City Brewing Works is mostly known for its breadth of original craft beer, but what you may not know is that MCBW is also home to original, artisanal pizza that stands toe-to-toe with its hoppy cousins. Made in a brick oven, MCBW’s pizzas have colorful names like “Mary Did Have” (olive oil, fresh ground lamb roasted with garlic, mint, pine nuts and topped with feta, labne, tomatoes, cucumber & zatar spice) and “The Godfather” (pesto sauce, goat cheese, roasted red peppers & roasted garlic). For those with a creative spark, MCBW lets you build your own pizza, giving you choices of sauce, cheese, meat, veggies and fruit.

Crispelli’s

With locations in Berkley, West Bloomfield and Troy (plus a bakery in Royal Oak), Crispelli’s serves up artisanal pizzas across metro Detroit made with fresh ingredients. Its goal since opening its doors in 2012 has been to provide pizza lovers with “affordable gourmet” pizza every day. At Crispelli’s, pizzas are made in a stone-fired oven at 700 degrees (a thin crust pizza will set you back five minutes, according to its website). While authentic Italian thin crust pizza might be on your mind once you step into Crispelli’s, it wouldn’t be a metro Detroit pizzeria without Detroit-style deep dish. As for your artisanal options, Crispelli’s has six variations, like Red Pie, Prosciutto and Shrimp & Chorizo, all in small and large sizes.

Pie-Sci

As the new, but familiar, kid on the block, Pie-Sci already has some history in the city it has decided to set up a brick-and-mortar shop. Prior to opening its own doors less than a month ago, Pie-Sci was a pop-up pizza shop (say that five times fast) on Sundays at Woodbridge Pub in Detroit. Now, Pie-Sci and Woodbridge Pub are neighbors. What might be the most standout feature of Pie-Sci are the vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options available to diners. Any large pizza can be made gluten free for three extra bucks and “most” pizzas can be made vegan for an extra dollar for a small, or two dollars for a large. Plus, Pie-Sci’s menu clearly marks which pizzas have meat, which are vegetarian and which are vegan.

This is how you Traverse Michigan. With cutting edge technology, tons of cargo space, and advanced safety features, Chevy Traverse is your key to unlocking the mitten state.

Amici’s

Amici’s was founded in 1993 in Royal Oak by George Stark and Sal Parko. Since then, ownership of the pizzeria has passed to Stark’s sister, Jennifer Stark, and her partner, Maureen McNamara. Now located in downtown Berkley, Amici’s is home to award-winning gourmet pizzas like artichoke pizza (artichokes, spinach, tomatoes, walnuts, ricotta and fontina  cheese) and Caribbean spicy jerk chicken pizza (spicy jerk chicken, peanut-ginger sauce, pineapples and mozzarella cheese). Like Pie-Sci, Amici’s also offers gluten-free crust options for a small upcharge, as well as vegan pizzas and who can forget Amici’s “Living Room” martini bar.
