How lucky are we that Cinco de Mayo is on a Friday this year? Weekends are exciting in their own right, but having a reason to celebrate by eating authentic Mexican cuisine, pub crawling in sombreros, and dancing the night away, is certainly an added bonus. Here are some ways you can celebrate Cinco de Mayo this Friday (and Saturday) in Detroit!
Arguably the best way to celebrate a holiday is by having a delicious meal. Additionally, there’s no better place to be on Cinco de Mayo than Mexicantown in Detroit. Taqueria El Ray in the heart of Mexicantown is famous for their grilled chicken dinners and offers Detroiters some of the most authentic Mexican cuisine in the area. Other great Mexicantown restaurants include Armandos, El Rancho Restaurant, and Mexicantown Restaurant.
If you want to have your own Cinco de Mayo party at home, creating your own Mexican cuisine is a nice change of pace from heading out to a busy bar or restaurant. You can get your ingredients from numerous places, but Honey Bee Market La Colmena offers an excellent selection of Central American ingredients. If you want to try something bold, the store is famous for their chorizo (spicy Mexican sausage). The store sells over 30,000 pounds a year.
If you need some good Mexican music to get into the Cinco de Mayo spirit, look no further than Tacos and Tequila happening at Elizabeth Theater at Park Bar in Detroit. The Collab will be throwing the party with music from Vibes by Jones, and there’ll of course be plenty of tacos and tequila to go around. There are several other great parties to choose from as well, including Cinco de Mayo at Market Center Park and Cinco de Drinko.

Parading around Royal Oak wearing a sombrero and a mustache during the annual Cinco Bash Pub Crawl is a great way to spend some time this Saturday. With over 1,500 people participating, the crawl gets pretty crazy as guests enjoy all of their favorite Royal Oak bars with “loco” specials. Participants will receive complimentary sombreros, mustaches, drink specials, and keepsake photos.
All of these are fun ways to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, just be sure to party responsibly and arrange for a designated driver if you are out and about! If you want to try some unique margaritas this weekend, be sure to come back to “In the D” Friday to see where you can get one.
