Reading is wonderful thing. Whether you’re opening your mind to a new world you could have never imagined, or learning something new that will improve your every day life, books are a great way to exercise your brain. March is National Reading Month and libraries and bookstores all across the metro Detroit area are celebrating with special events. Here are some we think you should check out.
The Ferndale Public Library will be holding their Ferndale Reads series in celebration of National Reading Month. The challenge will run until April 6 and four winners will win a $25 gift card to a local establishment. Complete rules on the competition, along with which books are eligible, can be found here.
Source Booksellers is Detroit’s home to the most unique non-fiction books out there, and they have some equally unique events to go with their books. Along with featuring authors and private book clubs throughout the month, Source Booksellers will be hosting their Mind, Body, & Spirit Classes every Saturday throughout March. Here is a list of different meditations and practices they will be teaching every week.
The University of Michigan will be holding special National Reading Month events at the Edward Ginsberg Center all month long. The events are aimed to explore the intersection of book access and social justice and will include events such as Family Reading Night, Next Chapter Book Club Showcase, and Words to Go.

Pages bookshop in downtown Detroit is one of the area’s best general interest booksellers in the metro Detroit area, and they will be celebrating National Reading Month with some great special events. Author Benjamin Shalva will stop in for a visit on March 25 and a discussion on Detroit’s New Urban Renewal with authors Rebecca J. Kinney and Andrew Herscher on March 28.
