It almost goes without saying that winter in Michigan is a pretty magical time, especially as a kid. When you’ve grown up and have kids of your own, you get to relive some of that magic through them. Personally, growing up in Michigan (and before that, Norway) I remember loving the first snowfall of the season because it meant I could finally go sledding and sledding meant a post-hot chocolate warm up next to a fire. Ah, good times.
As an adult, winter in Michigan means getting distracted on a late-night walk by the snow glistening as the moonlight reflects off of it. It means powering through the snow in the driveway because all that hard work will make the hot chocolate taste that much sweeter. There are a lot of things to love about Michigan winters. As it is the season of giving, we’ve compiled a list of great gifts for that Michigander in your life.
Heart of Michigan
Located in Howell, Heart of Michigan is a one-stop shop stocked wall-to-wall with Michigan products. Mitten Crate
Mitten Crate is a cool service for all Michiganders and Michiganders at heart. You can sign up for a one-time box of Michigan products to be sent to your door or sign up for a monthly membership (the monthly membership includes free shipping). Each box contains 5-6 Michigan-made products that are always a surprise when you open that month’s box. Past boxes have included Great Lakes potato chips, Dave’s Sweet Tooth Toffee, Benjamin Twiggs chocolate covered cherries, spirits from Valentine Distilling Co. and more. Michigan-Made was started and is run by three sisters: Rejeana, Debi and Kathy. All three were raised and continue to live in Michigan. They love the Mitten so much they decided to open an online store to sell Michigan-made products. There, you’ll find original woodwork, like this Michigan lazy susan, homemade hot sauce from Papa Turts, products made from beautiful Petoskey stones and more. You haven’t seen woodwork like this before. Lake Art uses one of three forms of engraving (single level, 3D and etched) to produce artwork that shows the Great Lakes in all their glory. You can get wooden pictures, serving trays, clocks, leather notepads and more that have popular lakes (not just the Great Lakes) engraved into the wood with multiple levels of engraving done to show the descending depths of the lakes.
