People. Love. Donuts. It’s no secret. However, for many of us, we have to convince ourselves it’s okay to indulge in a sweet treat every now and then. But, what if instead of having to convince yourself, we gave you seven excuses, one for every day of the week? Well, do I have something for you! Here are seven daily excuses to satisfy your fried dough-loving sweet tooth in metro Detroit.
As tasty as donuts can be, getting out of bed on a Monday morning isn’t anyone’s favorite thing to do. It’s hard enough getting back into the groove of the work week, not to mention having to get up even earlier if you want to stop off for some delicious donuts. Lucky for you, One-Eyed Betty’s in Ferndale has a maple bacon donut that’s only served at dinner time (M-F after 4 p.m.).
A popular tradition at Daily Dozen in Warren and Royal Oak is the custard crueler. Every week, Daily Dozen offers 52 donut flavors, but the custard crueler is a fan-favorite. Oh and, pro tip: Daily Dozen is so traditional it only takes cash.
The folks at Donut Bar + Coffee like to go all out sometimes. That can be seen in some of the eye-grabbing deliciousness you’ll find, like the peanut butter cup donut with actual peanut butter cups on top and the s’mores donut, which is topped with a piece of graham cracker and a marshmallow.

The beignet (ben-yay) is a New Orleans staple of fried dough topped with powdered sugar. In Metro Detroit they’re not as bountiful as they are in the South, but that doesn’t mean they’re non-existent. Beignets 2 Go in Eastern Market is probably the most popular choice in the area, but you’ll also find them at places, like French Toast in Plymouth and Bistro 82 in Royal Oak.
New Palace Bakery in Hamtramck sells a lot more than donuts, like cakes, bread, pies and strudels, but since the fritter is the close cousin of the donut, we’d like to highlight New Palace’s apple fritter. It’s not too light and not too sweet, giving you just enough to satisfy that apple-flavored craving. Over in Berkley, the apple fritter from The Donut Cutter is a must-try, too.
You can find a donut with sprinkles pretty much anywhere you’ll find donuts period. But, what about donuts sprinkled with something little different? Daily Dozen in Royal Oak has a donut sprinkled with crushed Oreo cookie. Avon Donuts has one sprinkled with crushed lemon-flavored Oreo cookie and a lemon drizzle. And Donut Villa makes a crunchy custard-filled donut topped with toasted coconut.
Over in Pontiac, Avon Donuts has recently brought back their fresh strawberry glaze donut “for good” and, boy, does it put other strawberry-flavored donuts to shame. A dollop of fresh strawberries is literally the icing on this cake donut! When talking strawberry donuts, it’d be a shame to not mention Donut Bar + Coffee’s strawberry chantily (homemade whipped cream, fresh strawberries and powdered sugar).
