They say the best things in life are free, and that is certainly true when it comes to things to do in the Metro Detroit area. Southeast Michigan has plenty of things to offer those who are looking to pinch pennies or have a cheap night out, without a cheap experience. Here are eight entertaining things to do without spending a dime:

Detroit Institute of Arts

The DIA has been a staple in Detroit since 1927 and its collection of world class art is considered to be among the top six in the country. Residents of Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb can enjoy free unlimited general museum admission with a valid Michigan driver’s license or state ID.

New Center Park Movie

The New Center Park movie series is quickly becoming one Detroit’s most popular free events. Every Wednesday and Friday night through August 31, the park hosts an outdoor movie screening that is completely free. The schedule of movies can be found on the site. The park also hosts various different free special events.

Morley Candy Makers Factory (Sanders Fine Chocolate)

You can enjoy a free tour of the Morley Candy Makers Factory where they make Sanders Fine Chocolate. Each tour includes over a half hour worth of chocolate making knowledge as guests can watch their favorite treats being made on a 180 foot observation walkway. Free chocolate samples are also provided, so you’re welcome.

From transporting food and goods to having enough room for pets and family, owning the right SUV is essential for pet owners. See the available features that make the Chevy Tahoe a pet lover's dream.

Marvin’s Marvelous Mechanical Museum

Named in the World’s Almanac as one of the 100 most unusual museums in the country, Marvin’s Marvelous Mechanical Museum has thousands of mechanical oddities and other exceptionally rare items to look at. It’s a great trip down memory lane for adults as they can see pinball machines and other old school games from their childhood, while children can see things they have never seen before.

Yates Cider Mill

There are some fine cider mills in the area, but the finest is arguably Yates Cider Mill in Rochester Hills. Not only are there delicious cider and donuts available for purchase, there is a beautiful river and nature path that is perfect for a walk with your family, dog, or even a date.

Slow Roll

Slow Roll offers bicyclers of all skill levels the opportunity to ride in a group every Monday night in Detroit. With over 3,000 riders every week, Slow Roll is not only the largest weekly bike ride in Michigan, but one of the biggest in the world.

Detroit Riverwalk

Whether you’re looking for a place to jog or a relaxing spot along the river, the Detroit Riverwalk is one of the most gorgeous spots in the city. There are also plenty of weekly and special events happening throughout the year, so be sure to check out the schedule.

GM Renaissance Center

There are plenty of things to do at the GM Renaissance Center that do not cost any money, including walking around the 5.5 million square feet area that includes seven towers. The RenCen also offers a bird’s eye view of the Detroit River as it rises 73 stories above the beautiful area.
