Everyone who loves tacos, morning toast or anything else savory that needs a creamy component also tends to love avocados. Avocados are considered a stone fruit, which means they’re so versatile that they’re also great in desserts.

Yes, you read that correctly – avocados are fruits that offer a huge amount of nutrients along with tons of flavor. Avocados grow on a tree and they are considered the fruit of that plant. Think of it as a large berry that is pear shaped and has a seed inside. It’s an enormous seed when compared to a raspberry or strawberry, two other well-loved fruits.

As far as nutrition goes, they’re packed with power. Avocados are full of fiber as well as vitamins C, E, K and B-6 along with omega-3 fatty acids. In other words, if you’re trying to eat healthy, plant-based foods, then avocados should be a part of the mix.

Many Metro Detroit restaurants have dishes that feature avocados as part of a savory meal. But you also can add avocados to smoothies and desserts, treating it like the stone fruit that it is.

Here are five Metro Detroit restaurants and bakeries that are using avocados in rich and creative ways in everyday meals, including sweet treats.

Baobab Fare

This newly opened restaurant in Detroit serves a wide array of African foods on its impressive menu. If you want to add avocado to the mix, you need to try its dessert called Tamu, which is a sweet dessert pudding made from creamy avocados and tangy passion fruit and garnished with chia seeds. It is described as “the perfect combination of creamy, sweet and refreshing,” so it is worth a taste.

Avalon Café

Most people have heard of a breakfast known as Avocado Toast, but some may be wary of trying this trendy food. That is why if it is your first try you should check out the offering at Avalon Café. Its Avocado Toast is a delicious combination of smashed avocado, tahini, cucumber, chili flakes, sea salt, olive oil and its beloved farm bread.

Bobcat Bonnie’s

One of the most traditional ways of enjoying avocado is to match its creamy texture against something crispy and light. At Bobcat Bonnie’s, it has combined avocado with its classic Cobb Salad, which is made with mixed greens, avocado, bacon, blue cheese, tomato, corn and honey Dijon mustard dressing.

Iggy’s Eggies

Eggs and avocado are a great combination because they both feature a rich taste that fills you up for hours after a meal. Iggy’s offers its avocado dish through what it calls the “Iggycado,” a kind of breakfast or brunch dish that has jammy-yoke egg, avocado, baby Swiss, marinated tomato, arugula and Iggy sauce on an English muffin.

Mudgie’s Deli & Bar

The avocado gets lots of love at Mudgie’s Deli and its menu offers tons of choices when it comes to including this stone fruit on its sandwiches or salads. One that is worth a bite is its Masonic Tempeh, which has vegan smoked tempeh slices, roasted red pepper, avocado, cucumber, sunflower sprouts and chickpeas. Served on arugula and agave mustard dressing.
