Opening Day in Detroit is one of the most celebrated days of the year not only because it marks the beginning of the baseball season, but it is a signal that warmer, sunnier days are ahead of us. The city celebrates all day long and there seems to be more to do than ever, so we are here to help by highlighting some of the biggest celebrations and events happening at this year’s Opening Day.

Grand Slammin’ Parties

Opening Day Block Party

The Opening Day Block Party at Grand Circus Park starts at 10 a.m. and lasts throughout the day until 6 p.m. 97.1 FM The Ticket will be there supplying everything you need to make sure you celebrate Opening Day right with giant screens to watch the game, food, drinks, music, and more.

Detroit Home Opener Festival

Silverado by lighthouse

Discover new horizons with the confidence of the Chevy Silverado, from busy streets to scenic views.

With beer tents, full bars, plenty of live music, and large screen TVs, the Detroit Home Opener Festival at the Madison Avenue Festival Grounds is a great way to celebrate Opening Day. Tickets are required for this event, so be sure to get yours before you head down there.

Opening Day with The RIFF

101.1 WRIF will once again be celebrating Opening Day with an all day party at the Fillmore that begins at 7 a.m. and doesn’t stop until 7 p.m. There’ll be prizes (including tickets to the game), free coffee and donuts to the first 100 guests, a big screen to watch the game, and music throughout the day.

Bar Hoppin’

There are plenty of great bars around Comerica Park to celebrate this Opening Day. Check out The Park Bar Coaches Corner, Hockeytown Cafe and Cheli’s Chili Bar, just to name a few.

Tailgating and Road Closures

If you don’t want to head to one of these parties or celebrations, you can always tailgate at Eastern Market or at lots like Lot 1, Lot 2, and 200 West Montcalm. Be sure to check out MDOT and detroitmi.gov for construction and road closures around downtown. Plan accordingly as there is an expected high level of traffic all day.

Motor City Wheels

The Motor City Wheels are back for another year of exciting races, but they have to settle a score first. Last year, Corey Vette started the season 0-63 but then went on a winning streak leading to a four way tie for first place with Bell Air, Cam Aro, and Shelly Chevelle. Since the final game of the regular season last year was a rain out, the Motor City Wheels are looking to settle the tie with their big race on Opening Day. The Motor City Wheels will once again be racing during every home game this season.

Rain or shine, Opening Day in the D does not disappoint. Whether you plan to attend a party, snag a spot at a local bar, or have tickets to the game, be safe and have a great time. Go Tigers!
