Showing your pride is one of the most cathartic things you can do. Showing your love for a culture or nationality with a community of people who share the same passion can make you feel at home even if ‘home’ is far, far away. Metro Detroit is a very multicultural area and has numerous festivals happening this summer that will give people the opportunity to express their identity or even learn about different cultures. We’ve highlighted five of them that you should check out.
Motor City Pride (6/10-6/11)
Motor City Pride returns to Hart Plaza to celebrate the lives of Michigan’s LBGTQ citizens. The festival includes events like picnics, golf outings, and a commitment ceremony and a parade. There will also be a Candlelight Vigil on Saturday night to pay respect to those the community has lost due to violence, along with honoring the 49 victims of the Orlando Pulse shooting last year. It’s a great event to learn more about the LBGTQ community and show your support.
St. Nicholas Opa! Fest (6/23-6/25)
The 24th annual Opa! Fest returns for another year of Greek fun! This year’s festival will include all the Greek food you can handle including an Iron Chef Competition where you can vote for your favorite Greek dishes. There will also be dancing, raffles, and a Greek marketplace.
American Polish Festival & Craft Show (7/7-7/9)
If you’re looking for Polish food, crafts, and of course, dancing, then the American Polish Festival & Craft show is the place for you. Thousands of festival goers will be treated to events entrenched in Polish tradition including a Pierogi Challenge where contestants compete to eat the most pierogis (sign me up). The craft show is also a huge draw, and if you’d like to have a table at the event, be sure to go to their Facebook page for information on how you can secure one.
Arab & Chaldean Festival (7/29-7/30)
Taking over Hart Plaza on July 29 and 30 will be the 46th Annual Arab and Chaldean Festival. The largest Arab & Chaldean Festival in North America will feature an array of music, art, and fashion from all over the Middle Eastern community. The festival will give attendees the opportunity to learn more about folklore customs, the history of Arab medicine, Arabic calligraphy, and more special cultural exhibits.
African World Festival (8/18-8/20)
Over 150,000 people will fill the streets surrounding the Wright Museum for the 35th annual African World Festival this August. Music, dancing, poetry, and art will all be on display for the family to enjoy over the three-day event. It’s a fun festival to learn more about African culture and show your pride with the Detroit community.
