Is there a food pairing better than burgers and fries? I don’t think so. But when the fries set before you are piled high with so many toppings, they’re a meal in and of themselves.

When a craving for more than just plain french fries hits, head to one of the following restaurants in Metro Detroit:

Lazybones Smokehouse of Roseville has so much barbecue, you may not give the sidekicks as much attention as they deserve. Pig Fries are on the menu, and consist of ranch fries topped with chili, Cheddar cheese, tomatoes, onions and jalapenos. Oh, yes, and pulled pork.

HopCat, with locations in Ann Arbor and Detroit, doesn’t call ‘em crack fries for nothing. They’ve been rated top 10 French Fries in America by Food Network magazine, for goodness sake!

The Silverado is the truck that works as hard as you do.

Try the Loaded Crack Fries, beer battered and seasoned, topped with cherry smoked bacon, pickled jalapeno, red onion and warm cheese sauce. Add chili if you so desire!

Zingerman’s Roadhouse in Ann Arbor has plenty of delicious offerings, including the Chili and Cheddar Fries. Twice cooked, the fries are topped with homemade ancho beef chuck chili with black beans and Cabot Cheddar cheese.

Dime Store, located in Detroit, serves excellent breakfast, brunch and lunch items, and you’ll find the most unique smothered fries around at this establishment.

A must no matter your main dish: a side of Bacon, Parm and Truffle Fries (topped with bacon lardons, grated Parmesan and white truffle oil) or Spicy Korean Fries (piled with shaved steak, pickled veggies and Sriracha mayo).

The Burger Spot of Plymouth gets my vote for “best burger around” any day of the week. If you’re looking for a towering side, order the Loaded Fries. They’re topped with bacon, green onions, Cheddar cheese and sour cream. You may not even have room for the burger!

George Murphy’s in Livonia is on a golf course and offers many tasty options. To start, try the Pizza Fries, topped with chopped pepperoni, pizza sauce and melted mozzarella cheese.

If, after indulging in these smothered fries, you still have room for something more, check out where you can find some of the tastiest burgers (with the best deals!) in Metro Detroit.
