Christmas Day meals often consist of hams, turkeys, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, or whatever it is that your traditional family meal consists of. So, maybe you want to venture away from the classic items and eat something out of the ordinary, such as international cuisine on Christmas Eve. Here are just a few ideas.

Italian

Antonio’s Cucina Italiana

Antonio’s has locations in Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Canton and Farmington Hills. This restaurant has become somewhat of a tradition with my family. For the past few years on Christmas Eve, we have ordered large carryout pasta dinners and sides from Antonio’s. The dinner menu is full of Italian favorites such as spaghetti, lasagna, tortellini, mostaccioli and much more.

Mexican

The Silverado is the truck that works as hard as you do.

Huerto Restaurant and Tequila Bar

Located in West Bloomfield, Huerto is open until 8 p.m. on Christmas Eve. The relatively new restaurant offers Mexican dishes such as fajitas, burritos, tacos, rancheros and tamales on its menu. Keep in mind it is also a tequila bar, so cocktails are plentiful here. There is also a takeout menu offering many options to enjoy at home.

Chinese

New Great Wall

Shelby Township’s New Great Wall is open on Christmas Eve and has both takeout and sit-down options. The menu offers many choices of chicken, beef, pork or seafood plates. In addition, there are also choices available for lo mein, Japanese udon noodles, chop suey, chow mein and more. Meals are served with white or brown rice.

Mediterranean

Oasis Mediterranean Cuisine

Oasis has locations in Warren and Livonia and is open until 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve. The menu is chock-full of Mediterranean favorites, such as shish kabob, hummus with shawarma, kibbee (baked, raw or fried), falafel and more. If you want to come in early, Oasis also has great lunch specials as well.

Shake things up from your normal traditions this Christmas Eve with some delicious food from a local establishment. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
