In a city like Detroit, where Mexican culture is rich (Mexicantown), you know the area loves to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Fun fact: Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day (that’s Sept. 16). The fifth day of May actually celebrates the country’s improbable win over French troops led by Napoleon III at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.

Here in the United States, we show our support for this occasion by eating Mexican cuisine, drinking margaritas and shooting tequila. Here are five local establishments you may want to check out tomorrow (and this weekend) to partake in the festivities.

Las Palapas

This Cinco de Mayo Fiesta is in Livonia. It is bringing in professional wrestlers to perform live! Additionally, the party features a live DJ, ice luge, and giveaways. The event, which starts at 11 a.m., also has a “Kids Happy Hour” from 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., featuring balloon animals, face painting and more. Don’t worry adults, there are also drink specials.

Huerto

West Bloomfield’s Huerto celebrates in style. Radio station 96.3 WDVD broadcasts live from the restaurant and bar, and there will also be live music. Tequila girls and drink specials will be available throughout the day as well. The party starts at 11 a.m. and goes until midnight.

Whether you're going out on a fishing trip, discovering new hiking spots, or heading out for a weekend of camping, the Trailblazer is an ideal companion for your active lifestyle.

Mesa Tacos and Tequila

If you’re in Royal Oak, be sure to head to Mesa starting at 11 a.m. tomorrow. The restaurant provides hand-made, authentic Mexican cuisine. The Cinco de Mayo celebration features live music, giveaways, a shot luge and more.

El Charro

The Fraser location gets the party started at 6 p.m. There will be a heated tent out back, and live music from the Flamingo Killers, a pop/rock band from Dearborn. El Charro is famous for its “Puffy Tacos,” and there is plenty of other Mexican food to choose from!

One Under

Also located in Livonia, One Under Craft Beer & Eats is celebrating a couple days late, on Saturday, May 7. Nevertheless, One Under offers two bars, an outdoor tent, 76 craft beers on tap and multiple giveaways for this event. The Killer Flamingos are set to perform here as well, and DJ Ricknasty will spin the tunes.

For those looking to get a truly authentic Mexican vibe, here are just a few restaurants to consider in Mexicantown: El BarzonTaqueria Lupitas and Taqueria Mi Pueblo.

However you choose to celebrate, be responsible. Happy Cinco de Mayo!
