Detroit-style Deep Dish Pizza at Home

When it comes to pizza in the Motor City, nothing beats Detroit-style deep dish. The origins can be traced back to Buddy’s Rendezvous (now known as Buddy’s Pizza) in the 1940s. However, if you’re staying home during the coronavirus pandemic and want to take a stab at making your own Detroit-style deep dish pizza, there are some great recipes online to follow.

For this article, we will be following a recipe from DetroitStylePizza.com. You will need the following ingredients:

  • Dough Ingredients
    • 1 & 3/4 cups of 85-degree water
    • 1/2 cup semolina flour
    • 2 tsp. sugar
    • 2 tsp. instant dry yeast
    • 3 & 1/2 bread or bakers flour
    • 2 tsp. sea salt
    • 1 oz. canola oil
  • Sauce Ingredients
    • 15 oz. crushed tomatoes
    • 1/2 tsp dry oregano
    • 1/2 tsp dry basil
    • Pinch of pepper
    • Pinch of sea salt
    • Pinch of garlic powder
  • Equipment
    • Thermometer
    • Scale
    • Kitchen mixer
    • Pizza cutter
    • Pan gripper
    • Spatula
    • 8×10 or 10×14 pans
    • Pan lids
  • Other Ingredients
    • 24 oz of shredded mozzarella cheese (or your choice)
    • Any other toppings you like
