Here in the Motor City, there’s no arguing over what kind of pizza pie reigns supreme: Detroit style deep dish. While Chicago has its deep dish and New York has its thin crust, we do it best in Metro Detroit.

No matter where you are in the D, you’re never more than a mile away from a pizza place of some sort. While there are plenty to choose from, the following pizza joints of southeast Michigan offer mouthwatering pies that will satisfy your craving for cheese, sauce and dough:

Buddy’s Pizza

With 11 Metro Detroit locations, Buddy’s has been serving up square pies since 1946. Detroit’s “original” square pizza is available in specialty pies like the Detroiter, The Florine Mark (brick cheese, spinach, mushrooms, garlic, black olives and diced tomato) and Chicken Fajita.

Buddy’s also offers gluten-free and multi-grain square pizzas.

From backyard projects to weekend getaways, the Chevy Blazer offers unmatched cargo space and convenience for all your adventures.

Shield’s Pizza

Shield’s makes its dough fresh daily, and uses premium Wisconsin cheese created just for the restaurant. There are three locations throughout Metro Detroit.

Specialty pizzas include Polynesian (homemade barbecue sauce, brick and Cheddar cheese, Canadian bacon and pineapple), Gold Medal (brick and Romano cheese, banana peppers, red bell peppers, tomatoes and garlic) and Athenian (Greek, feta and mozzarella cheese with spinach, tomatoes and mushrooms).

Niki’s Pizza

This Greektown restaurant offers pizza by the slice, so be sure to drop by if you’re in the area and hunger strikes.

As for whole pizzas, try the Famous Feta Pizza (topped with mozzarella and feta cheese, and winner of GQ’s “Best Pizzas in America”), Greek Pizza (with feta, onions, tomatoes and lamb) or Meat Lover’s Pizza (with mozzarella, pepperoni, ham, bacon and ground beef).

Detroit Style Pizza Co.

Owner Shawn Randazzo took home the title of World Champion Pizza Maker of the Year at the International Pizza Expo in 2012, so you can trust that the pizza here is top notch. You’ll find locations in Roseville and St. Clair Shores.

Order the D-Town Deluxe Pizza (topped with pepperoni, ham, red onions, green peppers and mushrooms), Hawaiian Vacation Pizza (with pineapple, ham, applewood smoked bacon and red onions) or Tangy BBQ Chicken Pizza, the 2012 World Champion Pizza.

Additional Detroit style deep dish pizzerias include PizzaPapalis (multiple locations), Loui’s Pizza (Hazel Park), Green Lantern Lounge & Pizzeria (multiple locations) and Cloverleaf Pizza (multiple locations).

No matter where your favorite Detroit style deep dish pizza joint is, enjoy!
