Did somebody say doughnuts? Oh, that’s right, I did. Doughnuts, although not exactly healthy, are definitely one of the more popular pastry items in southeast Michigan bakeries and doughnut shops, and for good reason – they’re delicious! I think it is my duty as one of your “In the D” writers to enlighten the audience on a few recently opened, or more discrete, doughnut shops in the area. You’ll want to stay tuned for this one.

Dilla’s Delights has been in the making since 2009 and has sold doughnuts at satellite locations since 2013, but it just opened its storefront doors earlier this month in the Ashley Building in Detroit. The donut shop is operated by Herman Hayes, and it is in honor of his late nephew, James Dewitt Yancey, better known as J. Dilla, a Detroit hip-hop producer.

The menu includes doughnuts such as chocolate-dipped with lemon filling, lemon zest, lime-glazed, raspberry-glazed and even a broccoli and cheese doughnut. Get there early, and get there quickly – doughnuts will sell out early.

The Daily Dinette

Opened in February in Ferndale, The Daily Dinette operates 24 hours a day. The menu offers sandwiches, hot dogs, burgers and, most importantly, doughnuts. The “Downtown Donuts” are $1 each or $9 for a dozen. The café offers doughnuts such as peanut butter and jelly, Samoa, frosted and plain. You can also go the shake and doughnut route for $6.

Donut Bar + Coffee

The Donut Bar, located in Southfield, opened in summer of 2015. It has some amazing doughnut creations. Think about these for a second: salted caramel, cherry amaretto cheesecake, peanut butter cup, s’mores, raspberry cream cheese and the list goes on. The Donut Bar only uses the highest-quality ingredients and doughnuts are handcrafted.

Beignets

While Beignets has actually been around since 2012, it may not be on your radar – and it should be. The mobile food purveyor services Eastern Market and other metro Detroit areas. It sells beignets, which is essentially a New-Orleans style French doughnut (similar to a fritter), out of a food truck. Flavors include traditional with powdered sugar, raspberry, dark chocolate and bacon! It also sells “cronuts,” or croissant/donut fusions.

After writing this, I am ready to consume multiple doughnuts at each and every one of these places. And then hit the gym for several hours straight. But it sounds worth it to me!
