The Detroit Design Festival (DDF) returns this week for its sixth annual celebration of creativity and the innovations of design in Detroit. The festival is organized by the Detroit Creative Corridor Center and features events and programs that will explore the ways in which design is shaping Detroit’s future.
Over the course of the five day festival, which begins on Wednesday night, more than 500 local designers and innovators will participate in over 30 events. The DDF is one of the largest of its kind in the country and is a great platform for designers to showcase their work and network with other fellow designers.
The festival opens on Wednesday night with a panel discussion of Detroit’s recent UNESCO designation. UNESCO is the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and The panel will discuss the city’s honor of being designated the City of Design. Detroit is the first city in the United States to receive this honor. The panel discussion will feature international guests from the UNESCO Creative Cities and Maurice Cox, Planning Director for the City of Detroit, will moderate.
Festival activities begin on Thursday at 8 a.m. with the first full day of Detroit City of Design Summit. The summit will also be happening all day Friday and will be convening Detroit’s design community and global partners to explore what it means for Detroit to build a better city through design. Saturday will feature the Bus Shelter Design Project Kickoff from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.with artist Kef Parker discussing his unique bus shelter designs and the power of art bringing a community closer. On Sunday, Open Streets will be happening all day. Michigan Ave. and Vernor Hwy. will be transformed into a giant street park where people can walk, run, bike, skate, and more on the car-free street.
