Animated movies, more so than any genre, can truly be enjoyed by all ages. Most of us have a soft spot for our favorite animated films, and to this day classic animated movies make you feel like a kid, no matter how old you are. Outdoor movies are a great way to experience an old favorite or a modern classic, and metro Detroit has plenty of outdoor movie series that will entertain the whole family. So whether you have kids or are just a kid at heart, here are five outdoor movie series that are guaranteed to bring out the inner child in everyone!
New Center Park in Detroit will once again play host to Friday Night Family Movies throughout this summer. Starting on Friday, June 1 with Rock Dog, the park will play host to family friendly films such as The Iron Giant, The Jungle Book, A Wrinkle in Time, Coco, and Sing. The park will also be hosting an outdoor movie night every Wednesday night with more mature movies like Get Out, It, Wonder Woman, and Black Panther.
Battle Ally in Downtown Holly will host plenty of free family movie outdoor screenings throughout the summer. This year’s movies include Despicable Me 3 on June 9, The Lion King on June 23, The Secret Life of Pets on July 14, Sing on July 28, Moana on August 11, and A Bug’s Life on August 25. Be sure to bring a chair or blanket and popcorn and other concessions will be available at each screening.
Family Movie Night at Village of Rochester Hills returns for its sixth year of animated movie fun under the stars. They’ll kick off the series with a luau and a screening of Disney’s Moana on June 15, then The Emoji Movie on July 20, and a concert and screening of Coco on August 17. Bring blankets, lawn chairs, and arrive early to get free popcorn (available to the first 500 attendees).

Celebrating ten years of summer fun, the Novi Civic Center will once again host the Sizzling Summer Nights starting on Friday, June 22. The first film of the season will be a sing-along version of Beauty and the Beast where the whole family can enjoy music, giant inflatables, and yummy treats! A pop-up waterpark will be available at the second movie night on Friday, July 13 to go along with the screening of Kubo and the Two Strings, while local artists will be on display before Friday, August 17’s screening of Coco.
The Milford Township Parks & Recreation has plenty of events to entertain the young ones over the summer months, including an outdoor movie series starting in July. The fun begins on Wednesday, July 11 with a screening of Monster Trucks, and then Max 2 on July, 25, Grease on August 1, and A Dog’s Purpose on September 29. There will also be a Drive-In screening of Benji the Hunted at Janowski Park on September 8.
