It’s that time of year again. The time where people consider their New Year’s Resolutions while staring at the decadent, sweet-tooth indulging, fried dough bliss that is a paczki. These Polish delights have been filling metro Detroiters with sugar-filled joy for decades and this year will be no different.
For many, Fat Tuesday is filled with jelly and custard temptations around every corner. You might make a silent promise to avoid these high-calorie treats at all costs, but if you decide to treat yourself, just this once, here are a few places you can satisfy your doughy cravings in metro Detroit.
Honcho/Union General Store

Clarkston-based Honcho and Union General Store (both a part of the “Union Family of Joints”) will be selling four flavors of paczki on Fat Tuesday. “The Fat Elvis” is filled with banana custard, topped with a peanut butter glaze and sprinkled with candied bacon and peanut brittle. The “Violet Beauregarde” has a blueberry filling, a lemon zesty sour cream glaze and oatmeal streusel. The “Birthday Cake” is filled with vanilla custard, topped with a sugar glaze, vanilla streusel and sprinkles. Finally, the “Blood Orange Margarita” is filled with a blood orange marmalade and topped with a salted caramel icing and white chocolate shavings. Pre-orders have sold out, but you can still buy individual paczki by walking into either location.
Paris Bakery
The long-standing Paris Bakery in Livonia will not only be selling six flavors of paczki; live music will also be provided from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. on the big day, courtesy of Joe Czapski. So, while you’re treating yourself to a custard, blueberry or raspberry-filled treat, take the time to sit, listen and truly enjoy yourself. With more than 25 paczki flavors, the Hamtramck-based New Palace Bakery goes all out on Fat Tuesday. You’ve got the traditional filings, like lemon, apple and strawberry. And then you have the New Palace specialty filings, like strawberry cheesecake, Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Puffs (all of which are new this year). If that’s not enough, there are special 2-in-1 and 3-in-1 fillings, like strawberry/chocolate delight and the Hamtramck Boat (banana custard, strawberry and pineapple, covered with milk chocolate). While it may not be a Polish bakery, Maria’s Italian Bakery still knows how to do Fat Tuesday like the best of them. They serve a lot of traditional paczki flavors like lemon, strawberry and chocolate, but there’s one that is inspired by their Italian roots: the cannoli cream paczki. Think of a traditional cannoli, but in paczki form. It’s a match made in pastry heaven. Located in Detroit, the West Warren Baking Company will be selling apple, blueberry, raspberry, prune, strawberry, custard, chocolate and lemon paczki for $12.50/dozen. You can even order your paczki ahead of time on their website or customize a gift basket and have it delivered.
