“When they are into it, it’s the best thing in the world.”

Marcus Concernicus, singer, guitarist, and keyboardist for Lucy’s Brown Seville, described playing his band’s soulful, funk-riddled music in front of a crowd. Influenced by the great Motown artists of decades past, Lucy’s Brown Seville is a funk-infused blues band from the metro Detroit area.

Comprising of four musicians, Paul Winterhalter on drums, Joe Nestico on lead guitar, Alex Patten on bass, and the aforementioned Concernicus on keys and vocals, the band roughly started forming in 2008. While they were putting their funky spins on songs like “Miss You” by the Rolling Stones at shows, the band started piecing together their own music in 2010.

As they grew more confident in their songwriting ability, the band released their self-titled EP in 2013. After working on music for another three years, they released their second EP in June 2016, titled “Heavy Soul, Vol. 1,” which is available on services such as Spotify and Amazon. The band is working to piece together two full-length albums.

Concernicus says the band is constantly recording and finding news ways to approach the music.

“We are recording a lot of stuff, it’s just a matter of funding and recording in between all our shows,” Concernicus explained. “We are riding this wave and we are really enjoying ourselves.”

As for the name of the band, Concernicus says it’s somewhat of a nod to legendary blues singer B.B. King. Both Winterhalter and Nestico are self-proclaimed motor-heads, so it made sense to blend their love for soul music and cars together.

As part of #MusicMondays on ChevyDetroit.com, we’re asking local artists about their favorite places and memories of metro Detroit to see what makes them tick. We asked Marcus Concernicus these metro Detroit themed questions:

What’s your favorite concert venue in metro Detroit?

Oh man, so many to choose from. I would say the Fox Theatre because of its grandness, but the Fillmore has great sound, Cliff Bell’s is intimate, and you can’t forget about Masonic Temple.

Is there a secret spot in metro Detroit you love?

Tangent Gallery, that place is great. They have great art shows, and it’s just a really great place. It feels like a second home.

One word to describe the music scene in metro Detroit?

Difficult. It’s awesome, but it’s difficult.

What is your favorite metro Detroit concert memory?

Cory Henry and the Funk Apostles. [Henry] is a child prodigy on the keys. I saw them at Bell’s Brewery in Kalamazoo first, and they just melted our faces. I then saw them a couple days later at Cliff Bell’s. That was awesome.

Lucy’s Brown Seville has enjoyed recent success as they have played in such venues as the Magic Bag, Cliff Bell’s, The Blind Pig, and at the Maritime Days Fest in the past couple of years. The band is currently back to work at the Stellar Cellar recording their new album, and plan to announce upcoming shows on their Facebook page.
