We may not live in New Orleans, but, as metro Detroiters we can still eat like we’re there thanks to several cajun/creole restaurants in the area. Taking a bite of some delicious seafood gumbo, or fresh catfish on a plate of homemade rice and beans…sorry, I drifted off there for a minute. Whether you’re looking to try a taste of New Orleans for the first time or can’t get enough of it, these four restaurants in metro Detroit will have you coming back for seconds.

Bistro Orleans

Located in Warren, Bistro Orleans prides itself on delivering authentic New Orleans cuisine, the recipes for which have survived generations. From delectable pastas, like “Fettuccine Andrea” (crabmeat-stuffed blackened catfish filets on a bed of fettuccine swathed in a rich creamy béchamel sauce topped with grilled shrimp), to 12 different po’boys, like gator, catfish, and cajun sausage patty, Bistro Orleans has such a varied menu that each trip is a new experience.

Gumbo’s

The obviously-named Gumbo’s does a lot of things right when it comes to cajun and creole food. With tons of classic entrees, like shrimp creole, jambalaya and sauteed catfish, you have little to worry about when it comes to getting your cajun fix here. What makes Gumbo’s stand out is its sister establishment, The Sweet Shoppe, which makes for a great post-meal dessert stop. Enjoy homemade bread pudding, bananas foster or a hot fudge brownie with a cup of coffee or tea — the perfect finish to southern cooking.

Louisiana Creole Gumbo

Originally known as Luzianne Creole Gumbo when founders Margerine and Joe Stafford established the restaurant int 1970, the Detroit staple is now known as Louisiana Creole Gumbo. Now managed by Joe Spencer and his company LCG Inc., Louisiana Creole Gumbo continues to make the same delicious New Orleans dishes and that includes its famous red beans & rice.

Faustina’s Creole & Soul Food

Faustina’s Creole & Soul Food in Detroit is headed up by Chef Anthony, who credits the inspiration for the no-frills establishment to his late father, Leonardo Faustina III. Every section of the menu is affectionately named after members of the Faustina family, like “Granny Rose’s Supper” and “Chef Anthony’s Entrees.” Thanks to tons of options, all of which are mouthwatering, Faustina’s gives you a well-rounded taste of ‘Nawlins.
