If there’s one event synonymous with the month of February, it’s Valentine’s Day. But, it doesn’t all have to be about the saint of courtly love. In fact, there are plenty of other reasons to take that special someone out on a date without the pressure of “that special day.” Just take a look at these food & drink events happening this month in metro Detroit!
Tom’s Oyster Bar on Main St. in Royal Oak is making February about one thing and one thing only: lobster. All 28 days this month will be brimming with lobster-infused dishes, like lobster bisque, lobster risotto balls, lobster cobb salad, lobster ravioli and so much more. Heck, there’s even lobster bisque ice cream for dessert!
Inspired by the films of renowned Japanese animated filmmaker Hayo Miyazaki, The Miyazaki Dinners: Ponyo Loves Ham is the latest in a series of special dinners at Kung Food Market/Studio in Detroit. Ponyo Loves Ham takes its inspiration specifically from the films Ponyo and Porco Rosso. Expect squink ink cavatelli, Jinhua ham, Singaporean black pepper crab, “Toro” rice and more.

What if I told you there was a place to eat pizza from more than 20 of Michigan’s best pizza makers for an afternoon? That place is Shed 5 at Eastern Market during the annual Pizza Throwdown. A $15 ticket will earn you five pizza samples (with additional slices available for sale from each of the vendors). Expect slices from Belle Isle Pizza, Detroit Style Pizza Company, Mike’s Pizza Bar, Pop + Offworld and more. There will also be a full bar, soda and bottled water available for purchase. Plus, live music by DJ Tom T. Experience Detroit from a different angle with Detroit Experience Factory’s Coffee, Tea and Chocolate Bus Tour. A $45 ticket will take you on a trip to one local coffee roaster, a tea house and a chocolatier. Samples at each location are included. Ferndale-based M-Brew will be hosting a pinball tournament to benefit Architectural Salvage Warehouse Detroit, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that works to salvage materials from buildings in southeast Michigan to be made available to low and moderate-income families. A $45 ticket will get you four flight-sized pours of your choice of beer, a pizza and salad buffet and entry into the pinball tournament.
