There’s a whole new way to ‘curb’ your appetite and that is exactly where you can find it. No, not literally on the curb, but at food trucks! Food trucks have become the new craze. We’re not talking your run of the mill hot dog stand, but real-deal gourmet meals… on wheels. Already a popular source of sustenance in many major cities around the country, the food truck revolution is making its way to metro Detroit with ever increasing popularity.
Food trucks have come a long way from their early carnival days of fried food and elephant ears (though those classics are always delicious). The new trend in Detroit eating is geared towards providing customers with affordable food choices that are creative, delish and quick to prepare. Many truck owners also strongly support local farmers and several are trying to go as green as possible.
Truck owners are following culinary trends where food becomes much more than just sustenance. This new mindset is reflected by a transition in the epicurean attitude regarding food trucks. Although in the past food trucks have gotten a bad rap, Jeff Aquilina, co-owner of Concrete Cuisine, says that “Michigan is slow getting into trends but we are seeing a lot more open-minded people [that are] not thinking of it as a dirty business anymore”. Dirty? No way. Delicious? Absolutely.
Concrete Cuisine, which opened its wheels in May of 2011, is a staple in Novi, Birmingham, Livonia and Farmington Hills. They specialize in high-end sandwiches and soups that can be paired with regular fries, sweet potato fries or fried pickles. With the slogan, “fresh eats on the streets”, Concrete Cuisine certainly does not disappoint.
When talking about food trucks, you must include Mark’s Carts in Ann Arbor; a genuine food truck oasis. Mark’s Carts is one of the only stationary food truck destinations metro Detroit. Comprised of eight different vendors, the food truck court has got a little bit of something for everyone. Places like The Beet Box and Cheese Dream cannot help but get you excited for a meal at Mark’s Carts.
Toss the Ferndale Truck Stop and Beer Garden – happening Saturday, June 23, 2012 – into the mix and you have got “truckie” (that’s what food truck lovers are called) heaven. The Ferndale Truck Stop and Beer Garden is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. On Saturday, from 10 am to 11 pm, there will be eight different food trucks parked in downtown Ferndale offering up their tasty creations.
To put the quintessential cherry on top, the Truck Stop will include a beer garden to make sure everyone stays wonderfully… hydrated. Several different breweries will be in attendance including Woodward Avenue Brewers and Short’s. And if you are on the fence about coming out to the truck stop – which, c’mon, how could you miss it? – put your doubts aside and come out anyways to support Relay for Life, which will be on site hosting activities for kids to raise money for the charity. Once you’ve given then food trucks a try click here to vote for your favorite Detroit truck!
Hit the curb and embrace the food truck revolution.
