Here’s a foodie term you may not have heard about: grocerants. That’s right. Restaurants inside of grocery store. Chances are you have been to a grocerant and not have known what to call it. Many of these grocery store restaurants are specialty markets that cater to a specific type of cuisine. Below, I have compiled a few of the local grocerants, each with a different style of cuisine. Whether you’re into Korean, Mexican or Japanese food, or maybe just like your food locally sourced, here are four grocery store restaurants in metro Detroit.
Hankuk Oriental Market & Restaurant
If you fancy a bit of Korean BBQ and other Korean dishes like kimchi fried rice and Korean fried chicken wings, Hankuk Oriental Market & Restaurant in Clinton Township is calling your name. Many dishes are soups or prepared in soup broth, like the duk-mandoo-guk (beef broth, dumplings, rice cakes, beef, egg yolk, green onion and garlic). Vegetarians will be happy to know there are Japanese-style noodle soups also on offer.

Next time Taco Tuesday rolls around, you might want to give this Pontiac market a go. With plenty of imported products, like juice and soda, and homemade products like salsa and tortilla chips, Carnival Market ensures a level of authenticity in their food. That authenticity extends to the restaurant where you can order carnitas, carne asada fries, a torta sandwich, quesadillas, fish tacos and more!
One World Market
With so many options in this Japanese supermarket, I tend to head straight to the sushi bar and order all manner of sushi rolls, soup and more. One World Market’s sushi bar may not seem like much at first glance, but one taste of anything off the menu, and it might just climb to the top of your list for quick sushi bites around town. Go with friends and grab a booth, or cop a squat at the bar and watch everything be prepared freshly in front of you.
The Farmer’s Hand
Having opened just last year, The Farmer’s Hand in Corktown has made a name for itself as both a supermarket and cafe that is all-local, getting its resources from more than 100 small to mid-size food suppliers in the area. In the cafe, you can find exquisite sandwiches, soups, grain bowls, coffee, tea and more. We recommend getting there early for breakfast to try the french toast, which is topped with lemongrass syrup, ricotta and pine nuts. Due to its locally-sourced nature, the menu at the cafe, like the supermarket, changes daily.
