Now that we are a few weeks into lent and Friday Fish Fries are in full swing, you might be feeling the effects of eating the (delicious) fried delicacy week after week. Sure, fish & chips, fried shrimp and the like are great, protein-filled alternatives to beef, pork and poultry, but it’s no secret that fried food packs on more calories and cholesterol than its fresh counterpart. If you’re looking to freshen things up this Friday, check out these fresh fish restaurants in metro Detroit.

Voyager (Ferndale)

Having made its mark in Ferndale as a cozy oyster bar with fresh seafood and delicious drinks, Voyager is a great pick when you’re skipping the fried stuff. Expect oysters, squid, uni, “Toad in the Hole” made with caviar and crab, and more. The best part is that all of their seafood is served from the ocean in less than 24 hours so you know it’s fresh. There’s also a great bar full of housemade drinks, a great wine selection and delicious craft beers from as far as Sri Lanka.

Fresh Fish House (Various Locations)

Fresh Fish House has five locations across metro Detroit and each one of them holds true to their commitment of fresh, delicious fish served daily. Try the tilapia, pangasius, white bass, catfish and more. Each catch can be served as a sandwich (bread on the side) or a dinner (fries, coleslaw and an extra helping of fish). Check out their blog for great recipes to try at home, too.

Monahan’s Seafood Market (Ann Arbor)

With more than 38 years of experience serving fresh fish to Ann Arborites and more, Monahan’s Seafood Market sports catches from all across the United States. New England cod and flounder, Florida red snapper, Alaskan king salmon, Lake Superior whitefish and more line the display windows at Monahan’s. Your selection can be cut to your specifications for you to take home or you can stay and enjoy a delicious lunchtime meal. Keep up with Monahan’s on Twitter to know the daily lunch specials.

This is how you Traverse Michigan. With cutting edge technology, tons of cargo space, and advanced safety features, Chevy Traverse is your key to unlocking the mitten state.

Alaska Fish and Chicken (Oak Park/Pontiac)

With locations in Oak Park and Pontiac, Alaska Fish and Chicken lets you pick out the catch you’d like and then they steam, grill (or fry) it for you for a small fee. Try the lobster tail, king crab, snow crab, grilled salmon, steamed jumbo shrimp and more. They also have great, non-fried sides, like coleslaw, okra, clams and potato salad.
