When it comes to comfort food, deep fried fish and chips may as well be best friends with burgers, pizza and chicken wings. This time of the year, fish is one of the most popular things to order, especially on Fridays when many people forego eating meat for lent. With the snow pouring down on us, why not cozy up with a few battered pieces of cod and some crispy, crunchy French fries in metro Detroit?

Kilgour Scottish Centre

The St. Andrew’s Society of Detroit, a nonprofit Scottish cultural organization, will be hosting Friday Fish Fries at the Kilgour Scottish Centre every Friday from Feb. 16 through March 30 at 5 p.m. Meals come with beer-battered cod (fried or baked), French fries, coleslaw, tea and coffee. A two-piece dinner will run you $8 and three pieces will run you $10. Meals for children under 12 will cost $5. Additional sides, like salad and mac & cheese, will be available for purchase. Additionally, there will be a cash bar for drinks.

The Claddagh

The popular Irish pub in Livonia will be serving up seafood specials during lent. That includes mussels, crab cakes, pan seared trout, fish tacos, Claddagh’s Fish ‘N’ Chips and more. If you’re looking for something flavorful to wash it all down, the bar has an excellent draft beer selection from local breweries, like Bell’s, Founder’s, Cheboygan, Roak and more.

River’s Edge Brewing Company

The Milford-based brewing company is teaming up with Barlow’s Gourmet Sauces, Authentic BBQ & Catering every Friday from 5-9 p.m. during lent. Barlow’s will be providing the fish and River’s Edge, obviously, will be providing the beer! The microbrewery has roughly 20 beers and hard ciders on tap and is constantly brewing and rotating.

Scotty Simpson’s Fish & Chips

With a name like that, do I really need to tell you where to go for fish & chips in Detroit? Awarded “Best Fish ‘N’ Chips” by Hour Detroit Magazine three times, Scotty Simpson’s doesn’t mess around. In addition to their “Famous Fish & Chips,” you can find a variety of seafood, like shrimp, perch, smelt and more.

Where will you be chowing down on fried fish in metro Detroit?
