Many think that poetry has died a cultural death in our society. But has it?
Wikipedia defines poetry as “a form of literature that uses aesthetic and rhythmic qualities of language—such as phonaesthetics, sound symbolism, and metre—to evoke meanings in addition to, or in place of, the prosaic ostensible meaning”. Poetry is not just a form of literature, it is words literally hugging the paper. Poetry is whatever you want it to be, loving, angry, comical even. Before there were such things as 140 character “tweets” and “status updates,” there was poetry.
The metro Detroit area has an amazing poetry circuit. From spoken word to live music, open mics are planted and pop up all over metro Detroit. You can even have a glass of wine while you finger snap and toe tap to your favorite local poet. Poetry can make you feel empowered and connected. Especially when you are surrounded by an intentional community of poets, artists, musicians and creatives. With open mics located all over the metro Detroit area here are a few you don’t want to miss.
