We all know the beauty of downtown Detroit. While you can walk, run, or ride a bike down the sidewalk to experience this beauty, wouldn’t it be better to have a whole street to do it? That’s the opportunity that Open Streets Detroit will present metro Detroiters this Sunday, October 1.

Starting at 12 p.m., you will have five hours to move freely along a three and a half mile stretch between Michigan Avenue and West Vernor Highway. The stretch of road will be blocked off to cars and the event is meant to promote physical activity in the Detroit community. Whether that physical activity is a bike ride, a walk, skateboarding, or rollerblading, it doesn’t matter, as long as you’re moving.

The street park event will also have free exercise classes throughout the area. You can try your hand at kickboxing, yoga, or even hula hooping. Open Streets Detroit wants you to find your next fitness obsession and will have plenty of sample classes for you to try out.

Along your journey through downtown Detroit, you’ll be able to stop on the sides of the street to visit a wide variety of Detroit area organizations and businesses. The event is expected to attract thousands of people and is sure to leave a positive economic impact on local businesses.
