August is National Sandwich Month, and if there’s one universally loved food item, it’s the sandwich. Grilled, grinder style or cold, sandwiches are much more than a lunchtime staple at your desk. Metro Detroit is filled with eateries that make gourmet sandwiches ready to be devoured, so when you’re craving one (always), consider the following:
Bread Basket Deli, with several Metro Detroit locations, claims that it sells over 12 tons of corned beef every single week. That’s due to sandwiches like the B.B. Special (corned beef stacked high with lettuce, tomato, Swiss cheese and Russian dressing) and Reuben (corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Russian dressing). The never-ending menu also includes other legendary favorites, as well as single deckers, three decker clubs and four decker sandwiches.
Mudgie’s, located in Detroit’s Corktown, is home to “Detroit’s best sandwiches,” and has been voted best deli five years in a row by the MetroTimes “Best of Detroit.” The main menu offers meaty and vegetarian sandwiches, or you can create your own. Try the Campbell (chicken breast with Muenster cheese, marinara sauce, spinach and roasted red peppers) or Porter (portabella mushroom with Asiago cheese, artichokes, roasted red peppers, tomato, spinach and pesto).
RUBBED, also of Detroit, offers a selection of delectable signature sandwiches and paninis, such as the Yooper (smoked whitefish, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and carrot), Meat Hater (mushrooms, facon herb spread, Cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions and sweet peppers) and Jammed Up (a smoked turkey panini with chèvre spread and raspberry coriander jam).

Lunch Box Deli of Grosse Pointe Park is the place to be if you are looking to celebrate Sandwich Month to its fullest potential. Order the Chicado (chicken breast, avocado, Swiss cheese and tomato topped with ranch), Tony Danza Extravaganza (ham, salami, turkey, roast beef, red onion and Provolone cheese) or Turkey Taco Crunch (ground turkey, Cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, tortilla chips and fiesta dressing).
Including today, there are 25 days left in the month of August, which gives you at least that many opportunities to enjoy a sandwich in the D. Celebrate accordingly!
