‘Tis the season to begin decking the halls! Nothing says “Christmastime” quite like putting up the Christmas tree, and plenty of surrounding cities in southeast Michigan are getting in on the tradition this year, with festive celebrations to boot.
Below, you’ll find details for several tree lighting celebrations in Metro Detroit this holiday season:
The 12th Annual Detroit Tree Lighting Ceremony kicks off the holiday season on Friday, Nov. 20 from 5 p.m. to midnight. Held at Campus Martius, the tree sits atop the Woodward Fountain next to the ice skating rink, which opens the same day.
Rochester Hills’ Light the Village 2015 takes place on Friday, Nov. 20. The event begins at 6 p.m. and includes the lighting of the 25-foot Christmas tree, holiday music, fireworks and family-friendly activities.

The city of Madison Heights will host its tree lighting on Monday, Nov. 23. Families can enjoy cookies and cocoa during the lighting, and afterwards, children can get their photo taken with Santa and Mrs. Claus.
Birmingham’s Annual Tree Lighting is Wednesday, Nov. 25 at 6 p.m. in Shain Park. The lighting of the 35-foot Blue Spruce will illuminate more than 40,000 lights! Other activities include live caroling, visits with Santa and horse-drawn carriage rides.
Light Up the Night is Novi’s tree lighting celebration, on Friday, Dec. 4 at the Novi Civic Center and Library. The event begins at 6 p.m. and includes marshmallow roasting, train rides, a petting farm and a visit from Santa.
The 22nd Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony of Auburn Hills falls on Friday, Dec. 4 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. During that time, Santa, Mrs. Claus and the mayor will light the Christmas tree. Family-friendly activities include holiday crafts and a bonfire with s’mores.
The Christmas Tree Lighting of Clawson will be held on Monday, Dec. 7 at Memorial Park at Blair Memorial Library beginning at 6:30 p.m. Families can also enjoy caroling and Santa’s arrival on a fire truck!
Additional cities with upcoming tree lighting ceremonies include: Troy (on Wednesday, Dec. 2), Wixom (on Friday, Dec. 4), South Lyon (on Saturday, Dec. 5), Berkley (on Saturday, Dec. 5) and Farmington (on Saturday, Dec. 5).
