We’ve all had those nights; no matter how tired you feel or how much is on your mind, you just can’t fall asleep. It’s something that many people deal with, and while there are potentially many solutions, there is one trend that has taken over social media the past couple of months: Moon Milk. The new take on a warm glass of milk has been a popular trend over social media with many saying it helps with insomnia and makes you drift into a peaceful sleep faster.
So what is moon milk? How do you make it and where can you get ingredients? We’re here to help with everything you need to know about Moon Milk.
Remember how you had that warm glass of milk before bed when you were a kid? Moon Milk is essentially an update on that where you add natural flavorings such as honey, fruit, and most importantly, ashwagandha. The Indian ginseng has numerous health benefits, but chief among them is that it has a grounding and relaxing effect on the mind and body. It is often used to treat stress, anxiety, fatigue, and most relevantly, insomnia. While ashwagandha is safe for most people, those pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid the ginseng, and those with chronic health conditions should speak to a doctor before consuming Moon Milk.
The past summer saw Pintrest, Twitter, and Instagram especially light up with posts of people trying their own versions of Moon Milk. While two of the main ingredients don’t really change (milk and ashwagandha powder), many experiment by adding their favorite fruits or honey for flavor and of course, the looks. Instagram and Pinterest were full of colorful variations of Moon Milk, such as those with cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and other colorful ingredients.

The actual making of Moon Milk is pretty simple, depending on how many ingredients you want to add in yourself. All you need to do is bring milk to a simmer in a small saucepan over medium-to-low heat, then you whisk in the ashwagandha and whatever other ingredients you’d like, and viola, Moon Milk. Be sure to whisk consistently and add coconut oil to avoid any clumps, and the process should only take about five to ten minutes. Experts say that the longer you heat, the stronger the medicine, so time may vary based on your preference.
Obviously most of the ingredients (milk, fruit, honey, etc.) can be found at your local grocery or produce store, but the most important element is ashwagandha and other ginseng. Here are a few local health stores that help you make the perfect Moon Milk for you: The Better Health Store, Organic Food and Vitamin Center, and Natural Food Patch.
