Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. You know the drill: chocolates, flowers, dinner reservations. Check, check, check! Wait a minute. You did that last year…and the year before.

Why not switch things up a bit? Instead of the usual Valentine’s Day with your significant other, show them you care and put a little thought into your plans. Maybe they’re a film fan and haven’t seen that indie movie everyone’s talking about. Maybe they’re weird and actually like being outside in February. The point is, there are plenty of ways to change things up in metro Detroit this Valentine’s Day.

Ann Arbor

Those who have been to the home of the Michigan Wolverines know that in Ann Arbor there is always something to do. Spending Valentine’s Day in Ann Arbor might mean taking in a movie at the Michigan Theater, which is always showing something you wouldn’t find at a chain theater, like AMC or Emagine. Don’t like to sit still. How about some rock climbing at Planet Rock? After that, you can head to one of Ann Arbor’s several breweries to grab a meal and craft beverage. If wine is more your taste, hit up DeAngelis Cantina Del Vino (open Saturday and Sunday) for everything from cabernets to zinfandels.

Detroit

Spend Valentine’s Day in Detroit and you will have no shortage of activities to take advantage of. We suggest heading to the Campus Martius skating rink first for some outdoorsy fun. If you prefer the indoors, Cinema Detroit, like Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor, is currently showing a few of the Oscar-nominated movies. Then, once you’ve worked up a good appetite, you’ll have your choice of one of several restaurants near Campus Martius, like Parc, Roast and Townhouse that you can simply walk to for a romantic dinner.

Adventure starts with a vehicle that’s up for anything. Trailblazer combines comfort you want, the versatility you need, and the technology to make every moment count.

Novi

What could be more romantic than a go-kart race with your significant other? JD Racing in Novi is an excellent place for indoor go-karting. A great track and helpful staff will make this a fun time for both of you. The upside? JD Racing is located in Novi’s Fountain Walk shopping area, so you’re just a short walk away from dinner at a multitude of places.

Royal Oak

This is going to sound weird, but hear me out. What if I told you the Detroit Zoo is holding a Valentine’s Day event called “Love Gone Wild,” that “offers a candid and entertaining look at how zoo animals do the ‘wild thing?’” That’s right, you can spend your Valentine’s Day at this 21+ event, learning all about the mating practices of the zoo’s furry friends. Hors d’oeuvres and drinks are included in the ticket price. If that leaves an “impression” on you, wash it away with Royal Oak’s nightlife. Plenty of bars, clubs and restaurants line Main Street and they’ll be calling your name.

Clinton Township

Pinot’s Palette in Clinton Township is holding “Seasons in Bloom – Date Night,” a Valentine’s Day event from 7-9 p.m. This is your chance to enjoy a night of painting with your significant other. Paint your next masterpiece while enjoying the night and glass of your favorite red or white. Click here for Pinot’s Palette’s full bar menu. Whether you’re hungry before or after you become a master painter, check out J. Baldwin’s for great pizza or Luciano’s for delicious Italian cuisine.
