The time has come that many of us anticipate all year long… That annual tradition of heading out for an autumn feast of cider and doughnuts! There is just something wonderful about sitting under a blue sky dotted with puffy white clouds, listening to the laughter of happy people and eating sugary doughnuts washed down by crisp delicious cider! The hayrides, the play areas and walks along scenic trails that provide a fabulous landscape of changing color, only make the trip to the orchard that much better!
In addition to the yummy goodies available to eat, there is also the fun of seeing how the cider and doughnuts are made. Many of the local cider mills have a viewing room that allows visitors to experience the process. It is interesting to see how your favorite apples come to be such a refreshing drink!
There is nothing that goes better with a cup of cider, than a fresh hot cider mill doughnut. These amazing tasty treats have become a staple of cider mill aficionados. The scrumptious little cakes get their flavor from a combination of the cinnamon, nutmeg and apple cider that comprise the batter. Then, deep fried and served piping hot, the combination is nothing short of perfection!
This year will be a bit different than those past at local cider mills. Michigan apple orchards were dealt a cruel hand early in the season. With the warm weather in February and the subsequent freezing temperatures, apple production in the state is significantly less. Never fear though, all of your local orchards and cider mills will still be open for business! Most have a bumper crop ready for making their cider and doughnuts. The only activity that may suffer is the U-pick option that is usually available at the orchards. Many places are looking to bring in apples from out of state, so although you will not be able to pick them directly off the trees, you will still have your favorite fall treats ready and waiting for you!
