Throughout Metro Detroit, there are many local farms. Some are hidden gems in the city and others are on the outskirts of towns with large operations. All of these farms grow fresh and delicious fruits and vegetables throughout the summer to help feed their local communities. One great way to try new veggies and support a local farming operation is through a CSA share. A CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) share allows folks from the local community to pay a fee to a local farm at the beginning of the summer and then receive fresh, in-season produce (and sometimes flowers) throughout the summer and into the fall. No matter what area of Metro Detroit you live in, there is a farm close to you to support. Check out some of the options below!

Grown in Detroit CSA – Detroit

The produce and flowers from this CSA are grown in small urban gardens in Hamtramck, Highland Park, and Detroit and then packaged together to create a variety for CSA shareholders. A typical box will have things like apples, eggplants, leeks, and fresh herbs. Boxes are available for pickup every other week at the Keep Growing Detroit Farm in Eastern Market.

Raindance Organic Farm – Whitmore Lake

Raindance Organic Farm offers CSA shares that include produce and beautiful flowers! They grow everything from tomatoes, beans, and peppers to delicious lettuce and fresh herbs. There is also an option to come to the farm and harvest straight from the ground, making it a fun outing for the entire family! You can also find their products at Argus Farm Stop in Ann Arbor.

Trinity Health Farms – Ypsilanti & Pontiac

Trinity Health Farms splits its CSA shares into the spring, summer, and fall seasons, allowing you to purchase a share during just one season or all three! Pickup can be done at certain time frames or with a self-service option. In addition to their own growing, they also work with local farms to stock their boxes and bring a variety of options to you.

Beaverland Farms – Detroit

Beaverland Farms is a two-acre facility that offers a full season of a veggie, flower, or chicken CSA. The veggie and flower CSA’s are what you can typically find at other farms, but the chicken share is totally different! Each chicken shareholder receives one whole frozen chicken and 2-3 other frozen pieces per month that can be picked up right at the farm. Check out their share options to make healthy and delicious fresh meals this summer.
